Bangalore to Coorg

Dear Friends,

I am traveling to Coorg on 26th September. Here is a small itinerary.

1. Boarding Train from Hyderabad @ 7:00 by Bangalore Express on 26th September 2009.

2. Reaching Bangalore on 27th September Morning. (Train right time is 6:25 AM).

I have never been to Bangalore and I have a couple of questions.

I have booked volvo bus through KSRTC online which will start from 7:00 AM from Platform 7, Kempegowda (Majestic Bus Stand).

Question 1: Is the booking through KSRTC online is a reliable option?

Question 2: In case I miss the bus what other buses (alternative low cost) you suggest?

Question 3: I found that some of the buses start from Mysore Rd Satellite Bus Stand. Where it is? How do I go there from the railway station?

Question 4: If I go through Mysore by Bus, what bus stand shall I avail of? Majestic or Mysore Rd Satellite?

Question 5: What other alternative travel route you suggest which will help me to reach coorg safely? (I can not afford taxi or car).

Please help me. Please!!

Thanks in advance

Anirban,

My comments inline .

Question 1: Is the booking through KSRTC online is a reliable option?

Yes

Question 2: In case I miss the bus what other buses (alternative low cost) you suggest?

Probability is less in normal scenario and you can walk from Bangalore City Jn to the platform you mention in 10 minutes Flat !. If you are worried, Cancel in the website itself and you can do the following.

You can board Train# 6731 [Dep Bangalore :07:00 Arr: Mysore:10:00 Hrs]. Just get unreserved ticket in bangalore Jn and you can board any of the Sleeper carriages and if TTR comes you have to pay the diff in Fare. This is normal and in that train , 70% of passengers will get down at Bangalore and the train will be almost empty between Bangalorre to Mysore Or Even you can book SL class in this train !!

Question 3: I found that some of the buses start from Mysore Rd Satellite Bus Stand. Where it is? How do I go there from the railway station?

This option can be Striked off ! Anyways KSRTC operates FREE shuttle between KEmpegowda busstand to Mysore Road Satellite bus stand !And Also Bangalore City Jn and Majestic / Kempegowda bus stand are just opposite to each other with a Road in between !

Question 4: If I go through Mysore by Bus, what bus stand shall I avail of? Majestic or Mysore Rd Satellite?

Majetic [KEmpegowda bus stand]

Question 5: What other alternative travel route you suggest which will help me to reach coorg safely? (I can not afford taxi or car).

Abovesaid options could be availed and just to reiterate , Bangalore to Mysore and Mysore to Madikeri are highly connected routes by bus !

Hope this helps. If you have any questions, Pls post !

Hi,

Question 1: Is the booking through KSRTC online is a reliable option?
KSRTC is one of the reputed government run bus services, infact it is one of the best in asia. Do not worry about this.
Question 2: In case I miss the bus what other buses (alternative low cost) you suggest?
to mysore you have buses which run like auto's every 5 min.
Question 3: I found that some of the buses start from Mysore Rd Satellite Bus Stand. Where it is? How do I go there from the railway station?
this is a new terminals, right in front of the railway station you have the bts(local bus station) and ksrtc bus stop and just hop from their or an auto will take around 40/= maximum.
Question 4: If I go through Mysore by Bus, what bus stand shall I avail of? Majestic or Mysore Rd Satellite?
where does your bus start from majestic or mysore road,
Question 5: What other alternative travel route you suggest which will help me to reach coorg safely? (I can not afford taxi or car).
From mysore you have plenty of buses to madikere, the head quaters of coorg district.
please post for any more info,

Hi velu,
Sorry yaar,I just missed it
The free shuttle service is valued. You can use the shuttle service to the majestic or any of the satellite bus stations 2 hours prior.

Dear Anirban,

I agree with Velu's suggestion a 100% !! To reiterate his suggestion ( ref Question 2) further, I would recommend that you book the Sleeper class on Train# 6731 through the IRCTC website ( or others like Makemytrip or Cleartrip). In other words, give up the KSRTC option for this time as you dont want your unfamiliarity with area to be a reason to miss your bus.

You can arrive in from Hyd, sip a cup of chai, walk up to the Mysore bound pf, jump into your train and continue your sleep! You can save your energy for the Mys - Coorg journey ....which will require you to take a short auto journey from the Mys Rly station to the Mys Bus stand where you can get regular buses to coorg ( Note: Coorg is the name of the region...you will need to ensure your destination is made known as several buses from Mysore go through towns in Coorg for destinations elsewhere...for eg the Volvo that you booked is headed onward to Mangalore VIA Mercara, the district HQ for Coorg)

That's a good point C195ikon !.

Anirban,

By Default, New Visitors use "Coorg" to refer " Madikeri" . Hope you are planning for Madikeri only !. Anyways buses to other parts of Coorg are limited to Very limited and Private transport is recommmended ! If by any chance you are planning to visit any other place other than "Madikeri" by bus, Post here so that I can share the related information !

What's so urgent about it? You only came up with this idea yesterday, eh?

A renewed (and no doubt fruitless) call to keep the words "Help" and "Urgent" in your thread titles for stuff that really needs immediate answering, folks; such as acute medical emergencies or dire visa trouble or something. (And while it doesn't apply to this thread title, giving some concise indication in the title of what it is you need urgent help on won't hurt either.)

It may surprise you but many regulars here will actually look at such threads straightaway; it gets a little frustrating if all they turn out to be about is what brand of toothpaste shall I use. Or I forgot to start looking into my trip in time, then.

Thanks.

Dear All,

Yes, I am going to Madikeri (Mercera) and my place of stay is Hotel HillTown. I liked the idea of pmvelu and n Kumar and decided to go in that way.

Can you please tell me what are the frequency of buses from Mysore to Mercara?

Also, are all the buses run by KSRTC or there are any private vehicle option? (buses, autos, or like in some places jeep runs on share services mode.)

How long will it take to reach Madikeri from Mysore?

Thanks for all your help.

Hi,

In addition to the questions above, if you can also let me know the platform number from where the Mysore bound Mysore Express (Train # 6731) starts? I know, the question is very specific, but if you know, please let me know.

There are Variety of KSRTC buses on that Circuit right from Volvo A/C upto Normal buses ! If you consider all buses, you have buses 1/2 an hour once to Madikeri from Mysore Sub-urb bus stand. From Mysore Jn, come out and avail "Pre-paid Auto services" and it will be 15 Rs for this journey from Mysore Railway Station to Mysore Suburb busstand ! There is NO private bus in that circuit Or Jeep and considering the frequency of buses other options might not be required at all !!

It will take 3 1/2 hours from Mysore to Madikeri !

Hi Velu, Dear All,

Thanks for all information you provided so far. But I am still there to ask you more

I was going thorugh KSRTC time table and found destination of some buses are to Madikeri and some to Mercera.

Are these two different places?

My hotel address is

Hotel Name : Hill Town Hotel
Address : Behind Vivus Hospital,Hill Town Road,
Coorg - 571201, (KA) -IN,
Coorg,KA

Where it is? Mercera or Madikeri?

How far is Mercara from MAdikeri, if these are two different places?

Thanks

Mercara = Madikeri Just two different names for the same place.

Note you may likewise find Coorg referred to as Kodagu; same thing again.

Wikipedia explains it like this:

Quote:
Madikeri was formerly known as Muddu raja keri. Muddurajakeri which means Mudduraja's town, was named after the prominent Haleri king, Mudduraja who ruled Kodagu from 1633-1687.

The form of the name often used in English, Mercara, is derived from Madikeri by a standard transformation of the retroflex 'd' to an 'r' consonant.
I've seen the exact same explanation for Kodagu (local and presumably Kodava language, well, still just a Romanized rendering of it) - Coorg (English); while they may not look very similar, if you swap the "d" for an "r" sound and combine that with some half-swallowing of certain syllables (and if you hear how it's pronounced locally), it becomes in fact easy to see how the one led to the other.
