How is the beach at Mangalore? How far it is from the railway station? How far is the Fort from railway station. I might be visiting Mangalore at the year end mainly for the sea. Where should I go?

@Mridula,

Mangalore Beaches are just normal and average.. Official Mangalore beach is near Mangalore Refineries LTD but I did not visited that till now ..

You could visit Surathkal Beach and that's what I feel closest to mangalore and at the same time good too.

Surathkal beach is around 12 kms from Mangalore . From Railway station, you could get an auto or Taxi to "State Bank bus stand" [Local name for City Bus Stand /Private bus stand. This is just 1.5 kms distance from Railway station] . From here there are many a buses to Surathkal ..

And I liked personally Malpe beach which is around 8 kms from Udupi bus stand[ Udupi is around 1 1/2 hour from Mangalore Private bus stand]..

Also If you waould like to have a different boat ride, you could try out the following [ nothing great and this is just for a different experience]:-

From City bus stand , take left and if you walk for 1.5 kms [Or else you could take an auto and the point name is "Jetty"] ..There is public boat service from this point across to a island kind of place which passes through backwaters and after the island kinf of place, Ocean will be there ..This is just 3 Rs One way and 1 Durgah is there and you could see lots and lots of "Dry Fish" all over in that place..

And also you could visit Kadiri Temple [ one odd habit I noticed here; people will walk all across this temple complex with their footwear on and they will leave just in front of the respective temples before they enter the sanctorium] --> 35 Rs auto from private bus stand

Also you could visit Mangaladevi temple [Several city buses are there again] ..

Fort, I did not visited as such...

Hope this helps

From Mangalore Private bus stand, Get a bus to udupi [Buses are so frequent] and 1 1/2 hour travelling time and get down at udupi bus stand.

Just walk across to "City Bus stand" and ask for "Malpe Beach bus".. Again this will be around 8 kms and the city bus will leave you at one point....

From there you need to get an auto [ 20 Rs Flat Rate] to the beach..

OR else you could get an auto from udupi bus stand directly to the beach too .. Not sure on the price thou...

Calm , nice, beautiful , Uncrowded and this beach is best between 3 pm to 5.45 pm

And just FYI, there is one Resort at this beach itself by name "summer sands" and even though it's a beach resort, the snacks are damn cheap out there.. You could give a try if you need refreshments...

Malpe Beach gets quite crowded in the late afternoon, though if you walk north for less than 500metres, you can get away from everyone.

The small (city?) bus stand in Udupi is closed at the moment as they're improving the road that runs along the edge of the bus stand, all the buses are using the bigger bus stand for the time being, the road works only started a few days ago, and will likely last a couple of weeks, but either way, it's only a few minutes walk between the 2 bus stands.

The Auto drivers in Udipi are cowboys, even the locals have to pay Rs40-50 for the short ride (about 2kms) between the railway station and the bus stand (a 500metre walk from the station (there's only one road) will get you to the main road, regular buses charge Rs4 from there to the bus stand (heading left as you approach the main road).

So I dread to think what they'll charge to Malpe Beach (the fare should be Rs85-90).

St. Mary's Island is good if you're staying in the area, but not worth the trip if you're only visitng for the day.

About 5-6kms north from Malpe Beach there's a 2-3kms long narrow headland, one one side is the sea, and on the other is some prety backwaters, and along the narrow headland are nice houses, friendly locals, a bright green mosque, a small church, a temple that seems to be dedicated to every Hindu god, and a really pleasant long walk, you can get a bus between Malpe-Malpe beach and the end of the headland, the bus runs every 30-60 minutes (depending on time of day) up till about 19:00, and the bus charges Rs8.

Velu and Steve many thanks. As this is just a day trip and we have a train to catch at night for Bangalore again I wonder if my husband would be happy to be dragged along. So Surathkal beach seems to be nearer? Any reports on that one? How does that compare to Malpe beach?

Beaches below Goa are not touristy. Managalore is a natural harbour. This means that the land mass drops steeply into the ocean. You will find 5 to 10 m wide beaches that drop from ankle deep to wait deep to neck deep with a few steps into the water. Not safe for frolicking unlike Goa.

Cheers

I saw the train at Mangalore station, mostly newish carriages.

A daytime train has been promised for a while, and as usual, the train still hasn't come into service, some politician will need a new belt to hold up his new larger trousers and all that money that keeps slipping into his pockets from the bus companies.

The daytime train will good for hetting to Hassan and the places near Hassan.

Have been told that Ayodhya Hotel is THE place for great, homestyle food (especially breakfast) in Mangalore, and that Tajmahal Carr Street is best for snacks.
