Badami region and on
After landing in B'lore half July and staying with the Indian family of my B'lore brother for a few days I will go to Hampi with him for another day or four. Then i will travel on alone i the direction of Badami. Any suggestions on friendly lodgings and things to do and see in Hampi and the Badami region are welcome. What i also would appreciate is a fellow traveller who cares for sharing a car&driver for a day or three in that area. Last question: is the monsoon masti in Panji worth while at the end of July and how are connections from there to Ernakulam/Cochin and Madurai?

Badami is great. Take the time to discover the more obscure sites!! I will head back there again..
As for Hampi, don't know what it's like there in July but definitely an interesting spot for a few days -- I stayed on the other side of the river where there are quite a few similar places to check out. Generally simple huts in a courtyard with some shade and a restaurant -- some have a view across the river. You get across the river in a little coracle from an easy-to-find launching spot. Fancier places in the town itself.
Connections south from Panjim to Ernakulam straight forward -- generally several trains a day, but not all trains run on a daily schedule (e.g. Rajdhani is twice a week, i think) Two useful dailies are #2618 (Mangla exp) departing Madgaon at 20:55 arriving Ernakulam at 12:10 and #6345 (Netravati exp) dep 22:30 arv 14:25.
and welcome to the forum!

I can definitely recommend the Hanuman Temple about a 3hrs. Walk from Hampi Village (GREAT VIEW!) You can get a small ferry from the boatsmen, but we prefered to walk it. We crossed the river jumping onto the different boulders and then just followed the sight of the temple. Just ask for directions if you cant’t figure out the way. We were there in November and it was VERY hot. I dare imagine what it will be like when you are in Hampi in July.
