Schedule for train 2JPJ Jodhpur-Jaisalmer?

This is probably one for Steven.

Does train 2JPJ still run between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer? Does anyone have an up-to-date schedule (I think last year it departed Jodhpur at about 08:40)? I hope to take this train on 30 December.

Is there a website where I can check the times of these local trains?

Thanks, Karuna, for the schedule and the link. That's a very useful website (but not exactly user-friendly, is it? )

Many thanks again.

No problems. That site looks more like an ICICI bank website doesn't it? You can't tell where ads stop and content begins.

What a coup for Indian Railways bagging "www.trainenquiry.com" though. There's some resellers out there gnashing their teeth I bet!

It's a very long journey, MickeyS timewise! Other shorter options - bus, overnight train...

It's not about time - I have all the time in the world - but about the experience. I took this train from Jodhpur to Phalodi last year and it was the most memorable journey I made in India. Not just the desert outside the window but the fact that I was the centre of attention for every kid on the train! This year I shall be travelling with my mother and a friend, and I want them to experience the "real" India in an unreserved second-class carriage too. (We'll be travelling mostly 2AC otherwise).

Another reason for getting this train in particular is that it leaves two hours later than the Delhi-Jaisalmer Express - giving us plenty of time to take advantage of the hotel buffet breakfast before we head for the station.

I see what you mean Mickey - and yes, it is a good time for leaving! The only thought I have now is will your mother be comfortable? I once travelled 2nd Class from Ajmer to Jodhpur, a journey of around 5 hours, when I was in my late 50's, with friends. They very kindly gave up the only seat they could find and happily sat about, wandered about the train etc. (These were Indian boys, sons of friends of mine in Jodhpur, all in their early 20's). I have to confess after one hour my back was killing me - the slope of the wooden back rest just not suiting me at all, after 2 hours I thought I was going to seize up - had to do constant 'stretch my legs' difficult in the crowded carriage and make sure one of the boys kept my seat so I didn't lose it. Not the best train journey...Is there a shorter journey she could experience? Maybe she is young, fit and agile!!!

I appreciate your comments, Aishah, but I wouldn't be planning this if I didn't think my mother would be comfortable. She's 70 (in fact, this trip is her birthday present), but fit and young-looking and I'm sure she will enjoy and treasure the experience. She adores travelling. She'll chat a bit, she'll stare out the window, go and sit on the step by the door if she is allowed to, or just curl up with a good book. This time last year we crossed Europe by train - from West Wales to Istanbul - and we did not for a moment tire of watching the world go by.

My experience of this train last time was very good. It was not crowded - although it may be different this time, of course - and there was plenty outside the window to look at. But I do have a stand-by plan in case one of us does not feel up to a 7-hour train journey - we'll just hire an aircon car and driver and go via Osiyan, Khichan and Phalodi.

That sounds a really good plan Mickey - for the train journey, some pillows and lightweight blankets/shawl might be good to make seating more comfortable. Should be nice temps during the day for winter in low 20's hopefully. If you see high winds getting up the night before and early morning and a lot of dust/sand blowing about, suggest you take the car. Around about this time you occasionally get big winds from the mountains with 'undi' (sand storms)blowing from Bikaner direction. Will make for a very sandy experience in your carriage because you will find windows will be open here and there! New Year's Eve a couple of years ago was like this...

I took the train in the other direction and had great fun playing cards with a group of locals, no idea what game they were playing so I kept loosing and having to buy the chai, great fun though.

The following were taken on a tiny narrow gauge line in Gujarat, these kids just swarmed me when I boarded the train, they were amazed a tourist was going to their village, and showed me around their school when we got off the train.

Great pics, Steven - reminds me of the time I took a local bus to Gokarna and it was just full of schoolkids around the same age as these boys. School had just finished for the day at the time I boarded it. I got a seat after 40 mins as more and more of them spilled out at their destinations!
