Mehrangarh Fort at Night

Has anyone been to Mehrangah Fort at night ? If so what are the pros and cons. First, is it safe? Is it crowded?. My plan is to maybe go late afternoon , hang around till on dark and take some pics over the town. Or should I make two trips? Any advice appreciated.

We did it some years ago. We were in Jodhpur during Diwali and the hotel owner organizes a trip for the guests. So we were there with a group on a special occasion and since in large parts of the town the people lightened their candles it was very nice.

But I think that on a ordinary evening it will be a very deserted area around the fort. I do not think it is wise to hang around it after closing time.
Just visit the fort in day time and if you still have the idea to go there in the evening hire a rickshaw and let the driver wait for the return.

Re' Fort at night

Thanks for that. That's exactly the sort of info I wanted to hear. I've seen pics taken from there at night and was hoping to take some but not if it's dangerous. Guess if I can't do it safely I'll have to settle for postcards.

You can have dinner at the Meheran Terrace, the restaurant inside the fort. I'm sure its safe to reach there, and you can have a good time, and also enjoy those night views.
There is also a special late evening tour of the museum with the curator which can be organized.

Decide about from where you want to photograph the fort visiting the area during the day. Rikshaw or taxi, do not be alone, as Vonkla said it would be lonely. Generally you would take a photograph from a distance, so you might not find it necessary to go to the fort. I am not to sure about safety as we used to be during our childhood, times have changed.

If you are planning to take photos from inside the fort in low light, be aware that tripods are not permitted there, unless you have already organised written permission from the Fort office, which is likely to take a month or so to arrive!

Thank you. There is a photo of the Mehrangarh Fort at the bottom of this page:

http://www.mapability.com/blogs/phot...otography.html

and some photos of the nearby Jaswant Thada here:

http://www.mapability.com/blogs/phot...ography-2.html

I saw an amazing photo featuring the Jaswant Thada in the foreground, and the Mehrangarh fort in the background. Unfortunately, I only saw it on the day that I was leaving, otherwise I would have tried for something similar myself.

I'm surprised to hear that you feel it might be dangerous at night! You see, I used to live inside Mehrangarh Fort (long story - a study-abroad program used to house students inside the fort, in a hidden hostel in the old zenana section, back in the 90s). NONE of us felt that the fort was dangerous after dark. To the contrary, we scampered around at will. However, entry and access to the fort after hours was highly controlled back then, so everybody on the grounds was known to security. If that has changed, I guess all bets are off.

We use to cycle down from Singhoria ki bari (towards Sur Sagar) in our childhood, but then I heard of one or two murders in Jodhpur, one near Rani Sar. From that day I am not so confident and would suggest caution. Jodhpur and Marwar used to be up-right places in my time and in history, actually the information deeply pained me, being a Jodhpur born and Jodhpur raised. BTW, my grandfather was incharge of the archeology department of Jodhpur state and curator of Jaswant Museum and Library for perhaps 40 years, Bishweshwar Nath Reu.

Tim, went through both the links. The photographs are extremely beautiful. What is the largest size available for your Mehrangarh photograph? We Jodhpur wallahs have a fort-fixation.

Sorry, that's a commercial photograph. I can't give away larger sizes for free!
