Jodhpur to Udaipur
Hi!
I'm going to India next August, for almost a month, and I have to travel between Jodhpur and Udaipur.
Despite all forums in which I've been, I have the same question: what's the best way to go from Jodhpur to Udaipur? Train, bus or taxi?
Does anyone knows prices and travel time?
Thanks for your help.
Bruno

Welcome Bruno. To answer part of your question, the most direct and scenic way to reach Udaipur from Jodhpur is by road using a local bus or taxi. I travelled between these places by local bus with a tour group once. If you use a taxi you could make a longer stop to see the very fine temples at Ranakpur on the way.
The more comfortable way to reach Udaipur is by train, changing at Jaipur. There is a minor train route via Marwar Junction but the booking computer just now displayed no connection between Marwar JN. and Udaipur. Jaipur has frequent trains to Udaipur however. Edit: not so frequent, there is a direct night train daily but other connections may be made via Ajmer.
I do not have the costs for bus(usually cheap) or taxi(negotiable) but train fares are available on the Indian Railways Passenger Reservation Enquiry website as are all train details. There are several classes of reserved train travel. I find 2AC or ChairClass most suitable, the former for overnight travel, the latter for daytime.

Reason: revised information
Hello,
As far as I know there is no train between Jodhpur and udaipur.
There is more than one bus per day and it is cheap. This was the plan I had,but then I changed my mind and went with the car and driver route. So happy I did.We were able to stop in Kumbalghar and ranakpur along the way....was so worth the stop.If you get the chance, stop for Lunch at the Jain temples in Ranakpur....all you can eat Vegetable Thali for 25 rupees one of my favorite meals I had in India).
The fort in Kumbalghar is not to be missed.
I was quoted 5,000 rupees for the drive, but when i spoke to man running my guest house in Jodhpur (Durag Niwas guest house) he found me a super nice driver for 3,200 rupees and it took 10 hours with the stops....plus he bought my lunch
as well as the best samosa I ever ate with mango chutney *drools*

Bruno,
We did it the other way, Udaipur to Jodhpur, by bus a couple of years ago. From memory, the bus left at about 8am and the ride took something like 6-7hrs, I think.
The journey passed through the desert - I loved it, my wife hated the trip! If we were to do it again I'd probably go with Goddess 75's excellent response above.
Enjoy the ride.

Dear all,
Thank you a lot for your help!
When in Jodhpur, I'll probably get a taxi to take me to Udaipur, with those two suggested stops in Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur.
Best Regards,
Bruno

Hi,
I can't speak for Bruno, but I feel I didn't have enough time. They were amazing places to visit and definately warrant a nights stay.
I also understand it is possible to stay in Ranakpur where the Jain Temples are for 10 rupees, this is a mat on the floor, but how cool would that be
When my travel mate enquired tho there wasn't room for her at the time. This is aalso the same place where you will get the vegetarian thali for 25 rupees.

There is some information of buses in Kumbhalgarh & Ranakpur - in a day.
I think you are not doing justice to Jodhpur. I would say skip Jaipur and return to Mumbai from Jodhpur.

Thanks Aarosh for the quick reply...
I read that people say that ranakpur-kumbalgarh cannot be done in a day...
whats your say?
after seeing these 2 places we would be going to jodpur...
I am not sure about jodpur for more than a day's time reason being there is only mehrangarh fort and Umaid Bhavan palace... wont one day suffice?

Normally most tourists hire a cab from Udaipur seeing Ranakpur / Kumbhalgarh or both on the way to Jodhpur. It would be a long day but possible.
Apart from the places that you have mentioned in Jodhpur, there is Mandore and Jaswant Thada. Osiyan can be done as a day trip from Jodhpur. There are Bishnoi villages near by which can be seen. There are also a couple of lakes near by like Balsamand and Jaswant Sagar Dam.

Have you checked Durag Niwas? They are recommended here often. You would need to book them in advance.
Durag Niwas has been great arranging things via email before our trip. I'm really looking forward to our stay, based on the reviews I've seen here. I just received a quote from Govind for 6.5 INR/km for this trip in an AC car during October. That seems to be fairly consistent with goddess75's trip. For some reason I hadn't considered that even though I am only going one direction, my driver has to get back. So, of course, would need to pay the round trip cost. I can see how, ideally, it would be nice to arrange with someone to use and pay for the trip back but that's pretty hard to coordinate from here. All in all, it seemed a fair price.
