Smile Jodhpur May June!!

Hey IMers

One sultry afternoon, as I sat surfing the net, trying to kill time, I was accosted by an utterly-insipid but extremely strong desire to make the most of my Summer Holidays in Delhi and Plan a trip to the Blue City in this scorching heat.

Yes, Jodhpur, the Desert, in this Heat, as if Delhi wasn't enough to bake my head. I know that sounds weird, but impulses control my life (Or you might say, Dimaag per Garmi Chad gayi hai :P)!

So, my dear fellow IMers, I'm planning a trip to 4-5 day trip to Jodhpur with a pal and would appreciate any tips on -

1. The Places to Stay
(Am a student on a very tight budget. Heard about Hotel Arun. How's it? Any other cheap options nearby?)

2. Visit
(The threads are self-explanatory, but anything else?)

3. Places to eat
(Local cuisine, but not at a place with a 'Star' Rating :P)

4. Do's and Don'ts!

Much Obliged.

D.

Dear Darthyev,
Jodhpur - Right now its very very sandy, sand storms almost everyday, but the character of the second biggest city of Rajasthan which is still very oriental since many years after the independence. It is one of the most oriental cities of Rajasthan today with the population raising 1.2 million people.

I would suggest Youth Hostel , circuit house road, for staying.

Places of interests, i am sure you may already know but i would like to make few suggestions looking at duration of your stay, The Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, Umaid Bhawan Palace, Sardar Market, Brahmpuri, Mandore Gardens are places not to be missed. If you have time and opportunity visit the Bishnoi villages(cultural excursion)jeep tour for half a day and Osiyan Village tour to see some very old Jain temple.

Try Mishri lal makhaniya lassi at the Sardar Market"clock tower" entrance gate from the Nai Sarak, Try Shahi Samosa and Mirchi Bada, specialty of Jodhpur, from Shahi Samosa opposite Sardar Market Entrance gate on Nai Sarak,Try the Omlette shop(his Cheese Omlettes are wow!!!)on the exit gate of the clock tower opposite doors from the lassi store.
Try Kulfi ,Milk Dessert at Parashnath Ice Cream(it has no water or ice)simple condensed Milk with lots and lots of Jodhpuri flavors at High Court Road, nai sarak Chourha.dont forget to try pan at Bhamasha Pan(sweet pan is called Ladies pan)it is situated outside vikram hotel, sojati gate and forgot to add try Mawa Kachori dessert at Janta Sweet Home, nai sarak. all these places are walking distance from one another and famous amongst the locals and are running since years by generation of the same family.
If you want proper meals(non vegetarian) than i would suggest kashmiri chicken corner or raja chicken corner, outside Anand Cinema, road opposite to Govind Hotel,Railway Station road, reasonable and very famous amongst the young jodhpuri men.
For Vegetarian meals ,try Gypsy on Sardarpura'c' road, they have wonderful Thalies.

Bargain with rickshaw wallah's, beware of touts around the center of the town "clock tower".

I hope you will enjoy Jodhpur, there are more information on Jodhpur in a long thread below also and feel free to ask more questions, i will be happy to inform you.

LittleKrishna - this is Gold! I loved Jodhpur when I was there a couple of years ago but of the place on your list I only tried the omelette places (both of 'em to be fair) and the makhaniya lassi at the clock tower. Will be back next year and will certainly check out the other places on your posting.
