Jodhpur and Jaisalmer

Hi,

I and my friend plan to go to Jodhopur and reach at 10.00am and leave for Jaisalmer in the night. Would like to know if we can have a place to freshen up in Jodhpur since we dont intend to stay there.

Is it safe for 2 Ladies to take an overnite desert trip from Jaisalmer. Can you also give details of who could offer a reasonable desert tour since we are on budget!

Thanks,
J

Hi

Hi

Hmm..my stay was at RTDC Ghoomar and I would suggest you call and request them for a room for a few hrs. Maybe some minimal charges to freshen up? Am not sure.

Righto. And Jaisalmer. We camped with Rajasthan Desert Safari. Extremely clean and safe place. You could chat up with Mr.Upender who organizes it. The phone number and details are in the previous thread where I've recounted my experience at these places. Once you ask around, I think your comfort level might improve.

Hope this helps. Have a blast.

I seem to remember that there are tourist facilities at the railway stn (unless I am getting confused with Jaipur). There were toilets, a shower, and comfy chairs (and all free)

The overnight train from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer was always a little tense at the best of times. With recent tensions in the region expect a bit more. I don't mean to be scare mongering: just be a little cautious thats all.

Should we book the desert safari in advance or book it later after reaching Jaisalmer?

Hi Bukoba,

It will be better if you clarify what you mean by 'overnight desert safari'. In case you are thinking of spending the night on a secluded dune with your camelmen and a few fellow travelers, the safety depends on how reputable your tour operator is. Go with a recommended/reputed one. Though i've not done the overnighter myself, my fellow travelers who decided to spend the night on dune didn't feel any security concern at all.

In case you plan to spend your night in a tented camp/resort sort of place in Sam/Khuri, I'd say they are absolutely safe. They are sort of like hotels with clean attached toilets and decent food.

Padlock all the openings of your bag and keep it in Railway Cloak Room for a nominal charge.

Just my thing - but problem with MOST railway cloakrooms is RATS. I've had personal experience with some friends' luggage so its not something i'd recommend (unless you have hard luggage like suitcases)

You're better off dumping your luggage at one of the places mentioned in lonely planet (most have a reputation to guard) - I've done it myself in those parts - Rajasthanis are lovely people.

Of course - YMMV. This is India - anything can and will happen

jodpur or udaipur

Hi all
I am new to this site. Looking for help. Kindly advise

My itenary is as follows
delhi-agra(1day overnight)-jaipur(3days)-jaisalmer(1day overnight)-jodpur(2days)- delhi.
Can you suggest if both udaipur and jodhpur are worth visiting or any suggestions.I need to fit in udaipur also in my schedule.I am travelling with two kids, 12 and 9. I thought both may be the same with lots of forts for my kids to digest.

ppinks2000,

You can cut one day at Jaipur and one day at Jodhpur and add Udaipur.

Jaisalmer fort & Jodhpur fort are two different kinds of fort.

Hi ppinks,

I would suggest this.

Jaipur (2 full days) -

1st day - Start off at 8/9 am and visit Amer, Jaigarh, Nahargarh (ask for Rang-de-basanti shooting spot) and Kanak gardens in the same order as mentioned. These are in the outskirts of the city and a cab is ideal as you can spend sufficient time at visiting each of these forts.

2nd day - Check out the city-palace, jantar mantar and hawa-mahal. All in the vicinity.

Take the night train from Jaipur which reaches Jaisalmer the next day at 12 noon.

Jaisalmer ( 2 and half days)

3rd day (half) - Leave imd to Sam-sand dunes. Take the camel safari on the dunes and get back to the city.

4th day - Start off early (say 8) and visit the fort (since the jain temple is open until noon). Then goto salem-singh haveli, patwon ki haveli, and garisar lake. All in the same area.

5th day - Go visit Bada baugh. Then take the noon train from Jaisalmer which reaches Jodhpur at night

Jodhpur (1 day)

6th day - Start off early. Visit fort and palace. Leave to delhi

Well, this was what we all did with 6 days in hand cos we didn't want an extremely hectic holiday And this was ideal

HI

Thanks for the prompt reply. As per your suggestion if I include Udaipur in my trip I can only cut a day from Jodhpur as my train is booked from Jaipur to Jaisalmer. So the revised itenary is as follows, appreciate input.

Delhi -
Day 1 - leave after lunch to agra. Stay overnight at agra.
Day 2 - after breakfast leave from Agra. Fatehpur sikri, bharatpur sanctuary on the way to jaipur. Reach jaipur at night. Day 3, 4, 5 - Stay at jaipur. Should I do Ranthambore for a day if there is not much in Jaipur for three days ?? Train from Jaipur to Jaisalmer
Day 6 - Jaisalmer - visit the fort (since the jain temple is open until noon). Then goto salem-singh haveli, patwon ki haveli, and garisar lake. Go for camel ride to sunset point. Stay at samdunes for the night camp.
Day 7 - Leave for jodhpur ( any suggestions by car / bus )
Day 8 - Evening leave for Udaipur(by bus- how to book ??)
Day 9 - Udaipur
Day 10 - Back to delhi

Cheers
