jodhpur airport to jaisalmer ince my confirmed flight to jasialmer from udaipur with kingfisher in july got cancelled I have to find a new way to get to jaisalmer from udaipur, was thinking of taking the indian airlines flight from udaipur to jodhpur landing at 16:40, then from the airport take a taxi or car rental jaisalmer straight away. Is it possible to get a taxi at jodhpur airport at that time to go straight to jaisalmer, are they prepaid? Does one have to book in advance or can one just get one? What would be the price for this? or are there any buses leaving from the airport straight to jaisalmer?

Try the train from Jodhpur There is a good train from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer at about 6.30 in the morning. It takes about 7 hours (slightly longer than a car)but is cheap and the second class air-condition is comfortable. The compartments have drop-down bunks or you can use the seats. The only drawback was from snorers in adjacent bunks as there is a only a curtain separation. Terrific views of the Thar desert and you can pop out for a chai when the engine moves from one end of the train to the other in Pokaran.

| I think the price for a taxi would be around the rp8 per km mark x 2 (the return journey). The distance from the Jodhpur => Jaisalmer is 282Km. So, the cost would be in the region of rp4000+ This is close to US$100. The train or even the local bus would be significantly cheaper option and although not quite as fast. Cheers Zoltan

What time does it get dark? If there a lot of traffic on the jodhpur-jaisalmer road, would it be safe to drive in the evening?

| Adding to desertrose's info - a Tata Indica should cost around 2,500 rupees Jodhpur - Jaisalmer. There are no buses from the airport to Jaisalmer as you will know from your other thread. You could get your taxi from the airport I think (desertrose might confirm this) otherwise go into near the railway station and there are a no. of car hiring places there.

A met a couple who paid Rs3000 for a taxi from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur. There was a place in Jaisalmer that advertised Rs1800 for the same journey, but I don't know if they actually honour that. I went by train in one direction (actually from Delhi) and by bus in the other. The "luxury" bus cost Rs160 I think, and went every hour.

Lucky Tours (I think they are still located adjacent to Surbhi Restaurant and near Hotel Bhawana, down the road that runs past the Police Chowki in Gopa Chowk and leads to the main road out of Jaisalmer) were doing a decent rate for taxis a while back, so maybe it's them, with that cheaper rate. There is also the newspaper taxi which I think Lucky Tours are still doing - you would have to leave early morning from Jaisalmer to get that one. I don't know though how you catch it coming back from Jodhpur. If you calculate the return journey at 560km x 5.5 rupees per km which is what the cheapest rate for an Indica with air conditioning is now, it comes to 3,080 rupees so yes, that rate could be correct now. The days of 2,500 rupees may now be over with the passing of time. Maybe, it is possible without air conditioning. Also, if you ask around you may be able to get a rate at 5 rupees per km.

Are there any remaining scheduled/charter flights to/from Jaisalmer? I checked all the airlines mentioned in the article about domestic flights. Kingfisher flies during the high season but not any more. I am looking for a flight in June.

I looked for flights in early April and couldn't find any. Someone told me they were suspended due to the political situation (Jaisalmer being close to the border with Pakistan). I don't know if that's true, or if they are just stopped for low season, or due to low demand.

They are stopped for low season. No flights were going since around the end of Feb. I haven't heard the reason is because of border insecurity, it's because of lack of bookings. This commonly happens with the flights from and to Jaisalmer.
