Visiting Kashmir

I'm planning to visit Srinagar and Leh this Summer (Around May 15-25), and was wondering what would be the best ways to get there? I would, ideally, like to take the bus from manali to leh, but I'm guessing given the time of year, the pass will probably not be open.

Also, we're backpacking, so would you recommend that we reserve in hotels before we reach srinagar/leh, or just wing it? Also, if there are any blogs about travelling to Kashmir, or any other websites, I would really appreciate it.

By 15th-25th May the road from Manali to Leh is unlikely to be open.
You can fly to Srinagar and then make your way to leh by road. if the road to Manali is still not open at the time you want to leave Leh, then you can fly back either to Delhi or to Jammu.
Getting accomodation in Leh without prior reservation is not difficult till the road to Manali is closed. The moment it is open Leh gets flooded.

vinay is right !
Better plan well-by the time you will be reaching LEH-you will be half dazed { I am usually } and tired from long traveling. It is not easy to keep on banging hotel doors and usualy they are either FULL or quote very very high.
