Visit to Kargil / Dras from Srinagar : Two days possible?

Hi,

Will it be possible to visit Kargil/Dras and back to Srinagar in two days (overnighting in Kargil). What are the options to travel from Srinagar and how long it takes?

[I couldn't find answers to the above in any other thread. So a new one]

You can take a bus or shared taxi from Srinagar to Kargil and spend the night there. Can you tell me why you want to do that? Neither of places have any thing worth traveling for two days.

Srinagar to Kargil road goes via Sonmarg, Zo-Zila pass, and Drass and normally it takes almost the whole day. So, for two days, u will just be going to Kargil, staying there at night, and coming back next day with very few little time for sightseeing.

Drass is the second coldest inhabited place in the world, and do not forget to take a glimpse of the famous Tiger Hill, the battle of which turned the tide of the Kargil War in favor of India, Kargil has a lot more to offer. If you take 2-3 days extra (or more), you can travel to the Padum, deep inside Zanskar valley, often touted as one of best scenics of Ladakh, and see the splendour of Nun and Kun peaks on the way.

My advise is, a complete itiniery (a separate one) should be added to visit this region.

regards,

Bhaswaran

I came to know that there is a regular shared taxi (sumo) service from Srinagar to Kargil. Someone please confirm.

Thanks Bhaswaran and Yogesh for your helpful tips.

This was more like a homage trip for the soldiers. I read somewhere that there is a memorial in Kargil. So, if I just keep it for the Kargil (and remove Dras from itin.), will that still take a day's travel to complete?

The memorial is at Drass, not Kargil. Well there is one, but it is inside the military base so you might not be allowed to go there. If you are interested in doing this, then it would be a good idea to hire a private taxi to Drass, since the memorial is 7-10kms outside Drass.

You may or may not get a bus/taxi from there to Drass or for Kargil.

Have visited the memorial twice, it would be well worth the journey. Here are few photos of the memorial www.bcmtouring.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=169

Oh yes it will take you almost a day even if you go to Drass, so better spend the night there or at Kargil.

Thanks Yogesh. Those pictures were awesome!

I think it may be a bit too much to do in two days. I have a flight to catch at the end, and I don't want to mess up. Any other ideas around Srinagar to spend two days (except Gulmarg)?

Pahelgaon or Sonmarg will be ideal. you can go to less visited places like Yusmarg also. If at Pahelgaon, definitely visit the road to Aru and also to Chandanwari. Pahelgaon-Aru road is more beautiful. If you want just to sit, go to Yusmarg or Sonmarg.

Leh to Shrinagar via Kargil and Drass

Hi all,
I will be in Leh from 10th August to 17th August 2008 with the BNHS camp. I plan to return on 18th August from Leh to Shrinagar via Kargil and Drass.
Thanks to Yogesh Sarkar's pictures I want to visit the 'Kargil war Memorial' also. Is it possible to get a oneway taxi to Shinagar from Leh? How much it may cost? How long it will take? Do we have to stay overnight at Kargil? Are there any facilities in Kargil for staying? Please I would like some information from you people. Thank you.

You can easily get a one way taxi from Leh to Srinagar, cost I am not quite sure about, but should be around 12k. It will take two days and there are plenty of places to spend the night in Kargil.
