Vaishnodevi
Hi Folks,
Does anyone know how one can go to Vaishnodevi from B'lore. Also wanted to know if Vaishnodevi is open for visits during DEC??? We would preferably be looking at Train travelling, and also some decent places to stay(not luxury accomodation). Thanks !!

Bangalore to Vaishno Devi is a pretty long haul. I feel the best way(by train) is to take the Rajdhani Express from Banglaore to Hazrat Nizamuddin and then the Malwa Express from H. Nizamuddin to Jammu Tawi. You'll reach JT in the evening, so halt for the night. Leave for Katra by bus(3 hours) early next morning. Then begin the ascent to Vaishno Devi.
I've no idea on the accomodation, but believe there are many hotels at both Jammu and Katra. The journey from Bangalore to ND is 34.5 hours and from ND to JT is 10.5 hours; and a wait of approx. 2 hours at Nizamuddin.

can really comment on first part of ur journey, i.e., banglore to Jammu. But, trains are available for Jammu from New Delhi also, Shalimar Express and Pooja Express. Shalimar takes little more time than the Pooja..
but for second part, you better reach Katra straight after leaving train at Jammu, provided you are not reaching Jammu at midnight. Because, when you again reach Katra next day, you will have to again take a hotel room because you cannot climb upto HOly Shrine with all your luggage. Plus, it will be convenient for you to take rest at Katra after coming down rather than going to Jammu.. I would suggest NIGHT STAY AT KATRA to avoid inconvenince. There are lots of hotels available at Katra Bust stand itself, ranging from dirt cheap to some very expensive ones... you can strike a good deal with brokers depending upon your bargaining skills. Don't afraid to talk to hotel brokers, they are not too manipulative, but again use your bargaining skills. Yes, the Holy Shrine is open throughout the year, although you might face some snow en route to Bhairon Mandir......remember, it will be extremely cold up there.

A quick question about Vaishnodevi ascent. How practical is the idea of taking 70+ senior citizens on this trip? Is the ascent to Shrine requires climbing steps (like Tirupathi)? OR is there a motorable road upto Shrine (again like Tirupathi).
How would February / March sound as far as the weather and congestions are concerned? Your replies are highly appreciated. |

Hi,
From Katra(Base Camp), you need to trek for around 13 kms to reach the shrine. The pathway is almost like Normal road only ( Very Wide and there is no steep Climb Or Steep Steps like Tirupathi Alipiri - Tirumala Pedestrian way). We went around 1999 and hence not sure on anything got changed . DO not forget to get the "Parchi" from the registration centre near to Katra Bus stand. We do not know hindi and even though quite a few people adviced on "Parchi" on the way , we are at loss to understand the meaning of "Parchi" and went all the way upto the actual base (Around 2.5 kms) frm KAtra bustand then came back to get the Registration form. After Darshan,we got a short cut from the shrine back to Katra , and this is completely Steep with all thru narrow Steep steps but walking down in a mountain is comparatively easier and through this way, it's 4 kms or so less than the normal route.(But Still the normal route is much much better when compared to this short cut). This website could give you the complete information on the yatra. http://maavaishnodevi.org/new1/index.html Hope this helps Velu |
