travel to leh via Srinagar

Hi,

I've registered on this site today and found that it's pretty useful place for tips and info.... i love travelling around and would definately contribute to the site...

i & my husband plan to make a trip to leh / ladakh sometime in early September... plan to go by road via srinagar.. was wondering about the security situation and how safe is travel from srinagar...

also if anyone is planning a trip around the same time, we are open to sharing the cab / taxi from srinagar to leh...

Srinagar can be pretty volatile, but it all depends on your luck. If there has been some recent political uproar or shooting then the situation can be pretty tense.

As for traveling from Srinagar to Leh, well terrorism exist till Sonamarg, beyond which its a safe zone.

Its good to hire a car or jeep to Leh. It allows the flexibility to stop off at the sites on the way (great). You should establish some basis for the level of speed and risks undertaken though..
