Travel from Srinagar to Leh

Hi Friends,

I am taking a flight from Bangalore and will be reaching Srinagar around 1:00 in afternoon.

How do you suggest i travel to Leh?

1. Take a shared taxi to kargil and next day to leh - will i get shared taxis in afternoon?

2. go for the midnight taxis that will reach leh without halt - will it be too tiring?

3. rent a bike at srinagar for one way travel to leh - please provide information about bike rental shops in srinagar?

P.S: i will be going for Stok Kangri trek after reaching Leh

Appreciate your inputs.

Thanks,
Swaroop

Dear

Take a shared taxi from srinagar and its advisable to break the journey on way so that you can acclimatise with the altitude.

Regards

Sunny

@swaroopjoshi, it would be nice if you could stay at Srinagar at least for one night before proceeding towards Kargil & Leh, so that you could acclimatize little bit.

@prakant...I dont think so there is any need for the OP to stay at srinagar for acclimatisation. He can staightaway go to sonmarg or kargil,no point in waiting and wasting a night in srinagar....

The weather at Kargil would be too cold for him as he would be coming from Bangalore, hence had suggested night stay at Srinagar!

Temperature of a place should also be considered apart from high altitude. I would have stayed for one day in between before proceeding towards Leh!

Moreover, I think, it would be difficult for him to get any shared taxi at around 2.30 from TRC Taxi Stand.

Hi Swaroop,

Two things I would like to add.

1. There is no need to acclimatize in Srinagar (5700 ft). But since you'll reach at 1PM it would be better if you spend that night in Srinagar and utilize the afternoon arranging a shared cab for Leh.
2. I'll not opt for midnight taxis, this is going to be a memorable road trip, so do it in broad daylights.
Regards,
Tamagna

Srinagar is too low to be of any use in aclimitizing to altitude. But, I agree about a stopover in Srinagar..

There is no effective acclimatization taking place below 2000 meters : you may have a marginal advantage from actually living in Srinagar @ 1500 meters , but for travellers this has no practical value. Stay in Srinagar for it´s other qualities ... which may be harder to get at by the curfew just now.

Thank you friends for your replies...

I have been to Leh before, so no issues with acclimatisation.

If i can't find a way out of Srinagar the same day, then i will stay the night there and proceed the next day.
