Warnings about this scam have been around forever. Just like the warnings of the other scams. It's a shame people don't listen to these warnings.

The biggest problem I had alone in Kashmir was with the constant stream of trinket sellers that would arrive at my houseboat every night selling the usual pashminas, paper-mache, wood carvings and third rate thangkas. They were very persistent but the worse guy was the money changer shakira guy who took my crisp, recently printed $100, changed it into rupees and then came back the next day with a pitiful, old, tattered note and said the bank had refused it and I had cheated him - got a bit scary for awhile put my host had to admit he had seen the transaction and stuck up for me.

well i hate to say it but we had the same tour group and same house boat experience. i was treated like scum as a woman and we soon realised that we either pay the money for the trip or he would get it some other way. we spent four days longing to go back to Delhi. You are right, the mountains were beautiful but the promise of "good food" was a little exaggerated as it consisted of a potato and a boiled carrot! Oh well, we learnt from our experience but unfortunately we now have mixed feelings about Kashmir. AND WE WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY TO ANYONE UNLESS YOU FEEL LIKE GETTING FLEECED AND INTIMIDATED. The guest book is full of good reports - probably as like us, the other guests felt too imidated to write anything truthful. Thank god we're out of there now!

Like Shark implies, read a guidebook, don't just get bounced around. These hassles and scams have been around for a long time..
