taxi from srinagar to leh

hi,
i'm planning to travel to leh in the first week of october, through the srinagar-kargil route. since the bus-strike in kashmir is showing no sign of ending, i may have to take a taxi from srinagar to leh...
i heard that share taxis are available in the range Rs.1200-1500. do these taxis do a night halt in kargil?
since i am going with a 3-4 friends, another option is to hire a taxi(not take a share taxi). does anyone know what the taxi fares are for just picking us up from srinagar and dropping us at leh? and do these do a night halt at kargil?
any information on the taxi-options/taxi-fares would be greaty appreciated.

Shared Jeep is Rp10.000 - we're in Kargil right now. Check the news before you go - we witnessed a car bomb explosion on Saturday.

Hello,

we have been to Kashmir in August and payed 10.000 for a Jeep-taxi. There was a day sightseeing in Srinagar included, so I think you could even get a better price. We stayed overnight in Kargil and everybody else coming by taxi did so. Have a nice trip!

Welcome to Kashmir
You can hire a Taxi or an SUV to Leh, its stopping or not in Kargil is your preference. If you need to travel direct to Leh you need to get up very early when its still dark like 4 in the morning and then move non stop, except for maybe food and other stuff. Its a long journey though and you have to be especially careful of High Altitude breathing problems. Otherwise you can move at ease and stay at Kargil overnight and let your body adjust. The JKSRTC Bus strike isnt still over. And about the Car bomb blast you needn't worry. I live only a KM away from where it happened and yet i go to work everyday.

You can get a shared Taxi to Kargil, reach there in afternoon, spend the night and take another ride next day.

Share taxi from Srinagar to Kargil would be Rs. 400-600 depending on the car and seat. You can also take the bus, which leaves from same taxi stand however at around 5 Am. They charge Rs.250 I guess.

For people getting to Jammu by train, what are the options to reach Kargil the same day?

Shared taxi? Bus? Booked taxi?

Approx rates? Any links which can help?

Its not possible for you to reach Kargil the same day from Jammu by any means as the time taken from Jammu to Srinagar is around 8-10 hours depending upon the traffic and the road conditions and from Srinagar it takes another 6 hours to reach Kargil plus there are other considerations like Army convoy movement and etc

We also plan to have Padum in our itinerary from Kargil, which I guess, would have to be arranged from Kargil.

Please let me know about possible travel options to Kargil from Jammu, even if it's a break journey.
