greetings all

phew! finally finalized our trip to ladakh via srinagar. (see prev posts for more info)

my question to all india mikers: can i take buses 1st from srinagar to sonamarg, than sonamarg to kargil, than kargil to lamayaru, than lamayaru to leh - with 1day breaks as indicated??

if yes, will we get seats on the buses or is it better to take the bus from srinagar to leh with kargil as night halt??

getting seats is my main question.

taxi would b ideal but would b the last choice.

looking for ur collective wisdom....

thanks.

Hi ... we had something similar last year.
Short answer, yes it is possible - no worries.

Here is the long answer...
We took the JKTDC bus from Srinagar to Sonamarg. This is typically for day trippers - more of a tour bus kind of thing. But you can purchase one way tickets too. The booking office is not too far from Dal Lake - a short auto rickshaw ride. You can buy them the day before you leave. Stayed in Sonmarg for a couple of days (highly recommended) and then went to the market in the morning and hitched a ride to Kargil. It would be difficult to find seats on buses. But there are plenty of shared cabs and tourist cars ... We didn't have to wait at all. We asked the restaurant manager to arrange for the ride while we ate breakfast
From Kargil, we ended up going to Zanskar and back. Then took cab to Lamayuru (Shared cabs are available too). Spent the night there and then again took a cab to Alchi. From Alchi we managed to get on to a local bus (you can hitch rides too) to Leh.

Some info which might come handy ...
Kargil Cabbie: Aksari 94198-43758
A nice place to stay in Kargil is PC Palace 94693-64675, 94191-76533 ... Helpful management, will help arrange for cabs/shared cabs.

There is a taxi stand in the main market in Sonmarg. Here is the number of the manager 94691-12945, 94194-76760

The buses start from Srinagar. Most of them are full by the time it gets to Sonmarg. Very few folks get off at Sonmarg.
The day trippers/travelers from Srinagar take the JKTDC return bus (Srinagar-Sonmarg-Srinagar).
Getting a shared cab or a ride is easier ... no hassles of getting into an already crowded bus etc ...
Unfortunately I do not recall how much we paid for the rides. It wasn't a whole lot.

Dear Mr.Madhu,

To acclimitize, is single nightstay of Kargil is sufficient, while going from Sonmarg to Leh

It would be difficult to get into even a shared cab as it also reaches Sonmarg with full capacity.

The best bet would be to return to Srinagar and then get a vehicle. OR seats may be booked before leaving Srinagar with an arrangement of pick up at Sonmarg!
