Srinagar to Leh

I would fly into Srinagar and fly out of Leh, just less chance of getting altitude sickness and if there is any problem in Kashmir (which could happen without notice) they usually close the Srinagar Jammu road, this way at least you can carry on to your next destination.

I left Srinagar by government bus, it takes 2 days and stops at Kargil overnight. You can either buy a ticket straight through to Leh from Srinagar or break up the journey as I did and stay in Kargil for a day. Either way it's good to book the ticket a on the bus a day earlier. If you want to go by shared taxi these are also possible and very easy. The drivers will probably find you before you find them. The ones in Srinagar depart from somewhere near Dal Gate and if you book through the proper desk you get charged the proper rate. The same in Kargil.

One other thing, don't worry about accomodation in Kargil, there are plenty of touts when you get dropped off. I didn't reach Kargil until 1.00 in the morning (I did the route a day or two after the road opened so it was very slow going and we got stuck due to an accident) and there were plenty of people there to take your money

Hope that helps.

If you want to avoid altitude sickness the night in Kargil is the key factor. Little difference in doing a non stop run and flying in.

The JKSTRC bus company is down from due to a strike for more than a month now - drivers are making the unrealistic demand of getting their last five months salaries.

In addition to what has been posted by other members, I would like to add one more point...

I would suggest Srinagar-> Leh for one more reason...
The ascending order of the "WOW factor"

i.e Srinagar, and the ride to Sonmarg is amazingly beautiful.
But the way the scenery changes as you enter Ladakh from Kashmir, as you drive through the Zoji-la pass has to be seen to be believed.
The first glimpse of Ladakh will blow you away. esp around Drass, and just before Kargil.
Then once you reach Leh, and start to visit places around Leh, thats an even bigger WOW.
Places like Pangong and Nubra valley. Unbelievable.
Does it make sense?
Also, by the time you have seen the Lake and other places around there, your body & mind does get tired a bit, and THAT is the time when you pack your bags and come back to Delhi.
After Leh, subjecting your body and mind to a 400+ km road trip is not a good idea.
There is a chance that you might think "I've had enough of mountains" :P and lose interest by the time you reach Srinagar.
I hope my post made sense, I did Srinagar-Pahalgam-Gulmarg-Sonamarg-Kargil-Leh-Pangong-Nubra-Delhi last month.

Also, I am not sure about shared taxis from Srinagar to Kargil.
Hope someone else chimes in.
But Kargil onwards, very easy to get shared taxix.
we paid 500 rupees per seat from Kargil-> Leh for a 2 month old Innova.
Fantastic experience.
