Srinagar city and side trips : A trip report

I'm afraid, a train journey from Jammu to Srinagar is well into the future, even a few years away ! Presently, the train from Jammu goes upto Udhampur and no further. I understand the route from Udhampur to Srinagar is a geological challenge, esp. around the Banihal pass area. I understand numerous tunnels have to be blasted through and many bridges built before the dream of connecting Delhi to Srinagar by railway comes to fruition !

Please update with any new developments I am not aware of.

Hi Guys, I would be visiting Kashmir (Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Srinagar & Sonmarg) in the 3rd week of April 2010....

In April Month you will get a good hotel room within Rs 800-1000 on any of the places you mentioned.

I am going to home most probably in March, will check some good budget hotel to suggest you.
transport is on sharing basis and within srinagar city you can hire a vehicle. i can help you to get the contacts for that if you want...

Hi it was a good collaborative Thread. i wish to go srinagar by my own car with family. but wonder weather its wise decision? i have a college friend there but still i apprehensive about the trip. i know its heaven but the worries about some mishap should not downgrade the joy of tour. Pl tell me dos and dont's about the place. I m planning mid july this yr.

Keep an eye on the situation here when you make plans to come. Right now it's tense, hoping by Mid July the worst will be over. It's already starting to improve a little.

Thanks a lot Ms Princess W . my worry about my own vehicle is still there.Pl advise about own vehicle journey. i hope things get better by the time i plan to move. i m surprised to know about heat. still i can manage pl enlighten about the rains. i hope the road does not get blocked there as it does in kullu manali highway.I have 5-7 days stay period pl suggest how should i proceed from srinagar (starting point) for most of good places.
