I'll be reaching Srinagar around the 20th of July. these are my queries:

1. does it rain quite a lot in Srinagar at this time? Should I carry an umbrella?

2. how expensive is vegetarian food in Srinagar? Is vegetarian food commonly available? could i have some names of cheap vegetarian food places?

3. do i need (i am an Indian national) any permit to stay in/travel around Kashmir and Ladakh? Do i need to carry any original identity proof on me all the time?

4. how expensive are internet cafes? are they good for the price one has to pay? will I, for instance, be able to upload photos and mail them in reasonable time?

5. is there any dress code i need to follow? I'm carrying jeans and kurtas with a jacket and a shawl. Do I need to cover my head all the time?

6. I intend to travel around the area for 3weeks or slightly longer. Can I rent an accommodation for that period of stay for cheaper than hotels?

Is there anything else I should know? Anything that'd be considered offensive or inappropriate behaviour?

It can't hurt. It's rained a bit these past few days.

2. how expensive is vegetarian food in Srinagar? Is vegetarian food commonly available? could i have some names of cheap vegetarian food places?

Around the Dal lake on Blvd Road it's very common. You should have no trouble finding pure veg food there or in many Sgr restaurants for that matter. Nathu Sweets on Boulevard Road is pretty inexpensive in my opinion and the food there is quite good and varied.

3. do i need (i am an Indian national) any permit to stay in/travel around Kashmir and Ladakh? Do i need to carry any original identity proof on me all the time?

A permit? Not that I know of. I don't recall anyone asking that of my husband (though he is a Kashmiri). I mean, it's always a good idea to carry proof of ID anyway, in Kashmir or not.

4. how expensive are internet cafes? are they good for the price one has to pay? will I, for instance, be able to upload photos and mail them in reasonable time?

The prices vary, but I think, in Srinagar at least, they're pretty reasonable. Last week I had to visit one to print 6 pages of documents and spent a bit of time online. I paid a total of rs.60. Leh, however, is from what my son told me, expensive.

5. is there any dress code i need to follow? I'm carrying jeans and kurtas with a jacket and a shawl. Do I need to cover my head all the time?

To both questions, the answer is absolutely not.

6. I intend to travel around the area for 3weeks or slightly longer. Can I rent an accommodation for that period of stay for cheaper than hotels?

I think you have 2 good options - either a guest house or houseboat. Are you planning to go to Leh at all, if so then you'd need accomodation there as well.

Is there anything else I should know? Anything that'd be considered offensive or inappropriate behaviour?

I can't think of anything really that wouldn't apply elsewhere in India.

Have a great trip!

Last month I was in Srinagar for 2 weeks. Based on my experience here is my answer:

Yes, you should.

We ware in Lal chowk Area, there are lots of Vaishno hotels. Though prices are 40-60% higher than in Kolkata.

I didn't went to Ladakh, But in way to Srinagar-Kargil-Padam, I had to show my Identity at two places Between Kargil and Rangdom.

In Dal Lake area, I was charged Rs 40/hour. Min. Rs.20, even if you use only 10 minutes. So it's very high in compare to Kolkata.

No, Not, but if you are entering in any Mosque (for example Hazratbal) you must cover your head.

You may get reasonable good hotel for price around Rs.250/night.

We paid 800/night for three double bed room.

One thing if you don't know, If you have prepaid Mobile, it will not work there, change to postpaid.

Nothing else.

Have a great trip!
