Sonamarg and Pahalgam in winter?
Hi i'm planning to visit india fr 15-30 Dec 2007. Will be taking a plane from Delhi to Srinagar. Staying in Srinagar 2 nights, Gulmarg 2 nights. I've got some spare time. I wonder if i could visit Sonamarg and Pahalgam in winter? Or is there anywhere in Kashmir i can visit? Probably another 1-2 nights..
It depends whether you like the cold - as I have always been told that Sonamarg is colder than Pahalgam this time of year.
That said I've never been to Sonamarg - Pahalgam is geared up for tourists and there's some nice walks in the area though I did find some of the places pricey for what they were offering hotelwise - stayed at the Grand View round the corner from the bus stand - 500r for a double but probably the most sorted shower in India (no waiting for the boiler to heat up!!) - you could prob get cheaper if you are on a budget as room 205 had a bath as well.
There's also Aru 12k's up the road which is really nice for short walks - summer a different story - stayed at the Rohilla Guest house there which is really friendly and they do the most amazing pasta ever for India plus having a wood burning stoves which keep you warm on these winter nights.

indeed, sonamarg was great!
snow everywhere, roads that run through a valley, a small frozen lake and river as oneheart has mentioned.
i enjoyed sonamarg so much more than pahalgam. You can take a slow horse ride up gentle slopes in sonamarg in winter.
Try not to take horse rides in pahalgam. the horses are made to climb up steep slopes and it's dangerous. both my friend and i fell off the horse. Unhappy horse threw us off. Hit my head quite badly, was dizzy for a couple of hours.
a horse ride is about 200 rupees per person, in case any of you wanted to know.

How would month of April be at Sonmarg and Pehalgam? Would it be considered a "Winter" month? Would the snow be still around?
Thx

Both have beautiful rivers flowing through them but sonamarg has snow capped peaks also. But pahalgam's peaks will be equally good or even better during winter. Also it won;t be tooo cold.(it's at 2100m and sonmarg at 2900m). But i doubt the rivers will be in full force during winters.
hi
its perfectly ok 2 go to pahalgam, but you have to be sure if the road to sonamarg is open as it gets closed 4 winters due to heavy snowfall

Guys,
I am planning to go on a 3 day Kashmir trip and am yet to figure out where I need to go.
Please dont mind the temporary itinerary as I am yet get suggestions and frame a complete nice and memorable trip
Dec 16-Dec 18 are the dates under consideration.
Itinerary:
Dec 16 Arrive @ Jammu by train at 5:40 AM
Leave for Katra and visit Vaishnav Devi Temple Get done and leave for Srinagar at 10:00 AM Reach Srinagar at around 3:00 - 4:00 PM
Do local sight seeing like say Shalimar Bhag, Shikhara ride and over night at Houseboat
Dec 17 Visit Gulmarg ??
Gondola ride to Khilanmarg , ponyride, skiing if weather permits Head to Pahalgam/Sonmarg for overnight halt.(which one? I'm confused)
Dec 18 Sonmarg or PahalGam sight seeing.
Head to Udhampur/Jammu to catch evening train to Delhi
I am still not sure what exactly I should be doing to make this trip a short but sweet one. I am looking for suggestions and I have only these days with me.
Here are few of my other concerns. Will it snow during this time in Srinagar area?
Can I see snow in Gulmarg and do some skiing?
Will the road to Sonmarg be closed or something? Many people suggested so
Is Pahalgam or Sonmarg a better place to visit given that I am visiting Gulmarg?
Any help will be appreciated.
