That's very sad. However, I wouldn't be letting any 9 year old of mine out into the street &/or anywhere near the madness of those protests.

Those are 'real' not 'plastic' bullets that the CRPF use for those situations.

I said the same thing, Peak. I got the news via Facebook while we were sitting in the peaceful Nishat Bagh with my youngest playing in the water with his friends and I couldn't understand how a 9 year old could have been allowed to be caught up in this. I've barely let my kids out of my sight since this started and we're not even in the areas affected (yet!) But without being there, who knows how it came about; I'm reserving judgment on that and just mourning the loss of this child among the others.

You're right. They're definitely real bullets, real guns fired, as evidenced by footage coming out from yesterday's events.

Violence spreads to south Kashmir, 3 killed in Anantnag firing

Quote:
Violent clashes between frenzied protesters and security forces in the area continued and two teenagers were killed in the ensuing clashes. They have been identified as Ishtiaq, a class X student and 17-year-old Imtiaz. Another protester named Sajjad later succumbed to injuries in the hospital.

With separatists giving fresh calls for a strike, life remained crippled across the Kashmir valley, including Srinagar, for the fifth consecutive day today.

It's definitely not good.

On Nishat road near Brein today I saw a roadblock and some minor clashes erupted but have since ceased as far as I know.

I had a little trouble getting out on the 29th June. Lots of roadblocks on way through Srinagar. I enjoyed my 3rd trip there in 3 years. Had a great time with no major problems.

Glad to hear it, Mike. When is your next trip to our beautiful valley?

Today was wonderful, with no curfew, no bandh in Srinagar. I ventured downtown (omg, it was the most crowded I've ever seen it), and enjoyed just getting out. People were very upbeat and happy, even when in lonnnnng queues for the ATMS. I stood in line at the HDFC one on Residency for an hour and a half because they ran out of cash and then when the guy came to replenish it, the machine broke down. There were a lot of people in line; not one complained about it LOL!

4 more killed in Srinagar firing, curfew imposed

Quote:

A student and a young woman were among four persons killed in Srinagar today as J-K Police and CRPF opened fire to quell protests, including those marching in a procession with the body of a 17-year-old who had been missing since the previous evening.

With the situation in the city deteriorating — 16 people have so far been killed in the recent wave of protests — the authorities clamped curfew but failed to put a lid on the protests. Late tonight, the state government sought the help of the Army to restore order.

Quote:
The CRPF opened fire at five places in the city today while scores of young men hurled stones and bricks at securitymen as they tried to enforce the curfew.

I spoke to my friend in Srinagar yesterday.

He said the situation was the worst it has been for a very long time.

Such a pity for the people of such a beautiful place...

It's so terrible, isn't it? For the first time since I arrived in Srinagar, I really wanted to return to the US. But still, it could be far worse than it is. I just hope it won't get that way, and the situation will ease soon.

According to my husband, who is in Leh presently, drivers are going from Srinagar to Leh and Leh to Srinagar. I think they've been given curfew passes. At any rate, curfew was lifted in at least some parts of the valley tonight.

Very thanks Ms Princess> I'm still in Manali. This morning the road to Keylong was closed. I don't know about tomorrow, but the sky is very dark

So probably for official drivers it's possible get curfew pass, but not for independent travelers.
The curfew, is for all day or just for some hours ?
In case do you know if could be possible hire an official driver and follow him with the bike ' or at the moment transit to foreign people is forbidden ?

Excuse me if i'm posting not very intelligent questions, but at the moment you are my only source of information.

Thanks again
Momi
