hopeful
my partner and i were planning on doing a loop through kashmir and ladakh from jammu-srinagar-leh. We have been following the situation as closely as the internet allows. From this limited view, it seems like all of these violent incidents are really localized and that it is still safe to go to srinagar.
Our concerns are that a road would be seriously blockaded and gettin stuck in an area we don't want to be in or that many businesses and public areas would be shut down which would defeat the purpose of visiting somewhere to enjoy its spaces.
All in all we plan to still head to srinagar in 3 weeks to make our northern loop. I hope this doesn't seem foolish as we have for many years wished to experience Kashmir.

Watch Out For Zombies!

Hellò, my name is Maurizio and i live in Italy. I'll be in India on 3 of July in Delhi. I'm planning to rent a motorbike and travel to Manlai-Leh-Sringar.I read that for some location (like Nubra Valley) you need a special permit, that is possible get from travel agency. But what's about the main road Leh-Sringar ? The tourist visa is enough and i'll find just military- block or check-point ?
Belive that from here (Italy) is really difficult find news about the situation in this region.
Any news about safe in Sringar ?
Thanks
Every big trip starts with a little step

you can check the daily newspaper on net about kashmir its greaterkashmir.com It is true you don't need any permits for Leh-Srinagar road, though you are also right that you need permits for Nubra and some other places. There are cheap places to stay in many places along the road.I've seen or stayed in cheap hotels in all of these: Lamayuru, Kargil, Drass and Sonamarg.

upto sonamarg u can find many gas stations from sonamarg onwards very rare so get yourself full before sonamargcheap means your budget?

Situation in Srinagar is quite calm and nice now. There really must be rumours about because I was asked this on the telephone from Delhi as well, that there was something very big and bad going on here in Srinagar right now. Not at all. Sunny is also right - on hartal days one can little tell because so much remains open and business is as usual. Only my boys have to stay home from school.

Sadly, yes. A 17 year old boy was killed Friday when he was on his way home from tuitions. Horrible thing
Some clashes going on, mainly around the old city area. There's somewhat of a shutdown although I don't think it's affecting the areas by the gardens, etc. That's where I live, and things are operating normally. Not sure about Dal Gate. I imagine Lal Chowk is shut down at least somewhat.
There's a strike tomorrow, possibly Tuesday as well.
