Hi
I'm a single female from UK about to visit Srinagar for a few days. Any information on current security situation would be appreciated, also on any hassles other women have experienced in the area recently. How warm is it during the day/night? Thanks |

I was in Srinagar less than 2 weeks ago. No major problems, there was a strike on at the time, this did not affect our visit.
It was much the same as when I was there last year, no problems. Everyone was great and wanted to know where we were from and what we thought of Kashmir. Good luck with your visit.

I'm from the US and a "single" female for all intents and purposes since my husband is out of town on business. I live here without any problem at all.
It's quite hot here as stated, but yes, it cools down wonderfully at night. Not much at all to report on the security situation. Very quiet ![]() |

The situation there changes on hour to hour basis...
Check one day prior to your scheduled travel.

To OP - don't worry about the single female part, that's not an issue in Kashmir. And I don't just say this because I'm 1/2 Kashmiri! ![]() |

It's still not so reassuring to think there are Pak militants cruising around with loaded automatic rifles, plinking cops willynilly in central Srinagar, and then being harboured somewhere in the valley. If this happened in Canada, I would say stay away, don't roll the dice ..... or come but pack you kevlar vest and chainmail pith helmut.

The attacks are likely planned to be random and opportunistic. The quiet situation the day prior is either not informative, or indicates a slight increase in risk. Given the active insurgency, the conditional probability of an incident probably rises on the condition that the previous day/week was quiet. Perhaps the overall frequency of such incidents in the most recent 3+ month period might be a relevant guide. That said, anyone visiting the area is taking a risk and should know that up front... |

I decided to skip it - extremely unsafe for Indians
Around July 25th I took a JKSTC bus from Leh to Srinagar. Earlier I had heard from some European tourists that their trip to Srinagar was underwhelming with visit to poorly maintained Mughal gardens and a small central lake.
Before reaching Srinagar I saw Indian army sharpshooters near the road and reaching the city found the lake to have weeds unlike clean Pangong lake near Leh. About 30-40 kilometers from the city the bus conductor opened the doors to allow a few young persons to enter the bus who quickly scanned the passenger faces (to spot Western tourists) and they immediately started harassing three Canadians sitting near me. One of those Kashmiri guys saw me talking to them and started pestering me. When we got down at the bus stand we were mobbed. I tried to help those Canadians and the mob (and the cops) seemed angry and asked me why I was helping those foreigners. I was mobbed by about 30-40 of those Kashmiris who ingnored my pleas to leave me alone. After some time I was physically assaulted by some young Pakistani militant-type and cops came immediately but didn't do anything. I immediately took the bus to Jammu. I think tourism in Srinagar is dead and I have no intention of my hard-earned money to go to anti-Indians Srinagar seems to have many of them. I feel bad for hard-working poor natives of Srinagar and Kashmir and did buy a lot of gifts from nearby areas and hope this helps them. I value my life though and have no intention of visiting Srinagar anytime soon. |

There was a strike in Srinagar; the taxi driver we were using would not cross over a bridge because of a confrontation between police and protesters. We decided to walk through this area which was a predominantly Muslim area within old Srinagar. Everyone we spoke to, which was quite a lot of people were very nice and just inquisitive. Never once did we feel threatened or intimidated. We also spoke to the Police when we were having one of our motorcycles repaired. There was no problem or attitude here either. |

Tribune today carries a story of a grenade attack that again misses it´s target ( a CPRF vehicle ) and kills a bystander , injures three in Rambagh ( unsure where this is exactly ). Sad paralell to the attack at Dal Gate on June 19th.
