Please advise the best places to do shopping from. We are going to visit Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonamarg. Which are the best shopping places in these areas..

I've read that buying from the shikara sellers is often tricky and we might end up buying the stuff very expensive. I want to buy the Kashmiri shawls and salwar kameez. What else in Kashmir is famous to buy. Also we want to take some dry fruits. What else?

Srinagar will be the best place for shopping.
Yes the shikara sellers will try to get the highest prices they can, just take your time and bargain hard.
I never bought anything from the shikara sellers, only from the shops around the lake & in the town - lots of Kahwa drinking and bargaining involved so it always took some time!
Shawls, bed covers & other fabrics you will be spoiled for choice everywhere you go in Srinagar.
Other goods you might like to buy - small decorated papier mache ornaments (very light to carry), leather/animal skin goods such as wallets, purses or handbags, saffron (make sure it's the real thing), cricket bats ( places on the road out of Srinagar towards Anantanag/Pahalgam), clothes of all kinds are available everywhere too. Kashmiri carpets are beautiful BUT it can be hard to tell what is good quality & they are expensive.
Lovely boxes of dried fruit & nuts you can easily buy in many shops in the city.
Srinagar is really a paradise for shoppers! Just remember to bargain hard at all times & don't be afraid to walk away if the price is too high you will soon find someone else selling the same thing hopefully at a better price.

Thank you bsue. Very detailed explaination. I will make sure I get some of those clothes and jewelery and some saffron and dry fruits.. Maybe some handbags and wallets too. I would love to caryy some kashmiri carpets but I am afraid they'll be heavy and I have an international flight limitation to carry baggage. Anyway thanks for the details.

Also... more suggestions are welcome please
