Shiraz Bagh Tulip Gardens

The May 23rd issue of the magazine Frontline has an excellent article with lots of pretty pictures of the newly opened Tulip Gardens at Srinagar.

May be of interest to anyone planning a trip there. I'd love to visit Kashmir someday.

Hi,
Early June days we tried to have a look at the tulip garden. No tulips were there. The Garden staff told us that the tulips bloom during late march to late April period and by 10/May or so they have withered.Since the garden is still taking shape-the staff does not encourage us to go inside.However-just opposite this tulip garden is the Nehru botanical garden where systematic tissue culture experiments and scientific cultivation of some exotic plant species is made under green-house conditions. It is worth a look for those who enjoy botanical science.near entry gate, they have displayed scientific names of floral plants growing in Kashmir(visitors have seen in Shalimar or Nishat Gardens but sadly they are not labelled for identification in these Gardens). They also sell seeds of select flowering plants.
The staff of green-house is good and co-operative,but senior staffers are like typical Indian beaurocrats.
Overlall,Tulip garden will be in good shape by 2010.Those planning a trip in mid April will be rewarded with tulips.
