Share a Sumo from Srinigar to Leh?

Hello all, does anyone fancy sharing a Sumo from Srinigar to Leh on June 15th? Sorry to be so specific but me and my boyfriend are travelling on a tight schedule.

Alternatively, does anyone have a contact for booking space on a deluxe bus for that route? On the official bus site it only lists semi-deluxe (and after a rather taxing journey up to dharamsala I think I need the upgrade ).

Thanks and bring on that rain!

What you can do is go to TRC, Srinagar and book a deluxe bus. The cost to Leh would be Rs 620 with a stopover at kargil for the night. (Tip:- the bus has just 24 seats hence ensure you get seats numbered in the mid teens or early teens else be prepared for a cool joy ride).

Opp the TRC is the Taxi stand what you can do is go one day in advance and look for share jeep options. Most share jeeps will want to do the trip to leh in one go without a halt. Which is not a good idea with you not acclimatized. An option is to opt for a share jeep to kargil and have a night halt and do the same thing again from kargil the next day.

Frankly speaking the bus ride is not bad at all i did it on 26th May'08 my self. Just book in advance and go. In Kargil you can stay at Hotel Dreamland for 300 a night. Decent place. Also try to opt for the seats on the right side for good views.

GeeGee,

I would be interested in this journey. However, have you considered an alternate route? from Manali to Leh? They say its more scenic and i would agree.

I am 29 male form London and of Indian origin. I am travelling alone. If you or your bf want me to accompany you then please email me directly on ssandhu321(at)aol(dot)com

Please let me know a little bit about the both of you.

Thanks,
Sumit

Hi Sumit,

I've heard that too but that the acclimitization from the Srinigar side is easier. In any case, we're going to be in Kashmir so it makes more sense (so many roads, so little time!). If you're still interested, let me know and I'll email you directly.

Hear, hear ! The night in Kargil (2700) is almost the whole point of the Srinagar-Leh road as a way of acclimatizing, the single day run is about the same as flying in.

Manali-Leh is the scenic route , Srinagar-Leh is more of a cultural ride with Lamayuru for example. The scenic value is lost for a lot of the travellers while coping with the altitude effects ( headaches , nausea, vomiting
or worse ) : first time I did Manali-Leh I had to deal with a fellow passenger going unconscious.

Going from Srinagar you sleep at 2700 , and the max altitude is around 4000 , from Manali you sleep higher than the highest passes between Srinagar and Leh , and max altitude is the same as Everest Base Camp.Major difference.

Vistet not trying to get into an argument or debate but i found it the other way...i found the ride from Srinagar to Leh much more scenic. The way from Leh to Manali was good but post Surchu it gets very muddy and dusty ... This is just my outlook i guess !

Also adding to what Vistet correctly mentioned about acclimatization. You will find Surchu pretty cold to stay as compared to Kargil. Also facilities wise Kargil has much more to offer compared to Surchu.

No , we really have to hash this out , there can only be one correct answer on what is the most beautiful...

Being cold in Sarchu is a three part cocktail : altitude means colder in degrees (1.5 degrees per hundred meters means around twelve degrees colder than Leh), tent adds wind chill and last but not least insufficient acclimatization means strangulated circulation in hands and feet.

Hi Geegee,

My trip to India is mostly business but i am trying my best to sight see India too. I have also been thinking of going to Amarnath ji. What I can do is go to Amarnath on my own and return back to Srinagar by 15th. Meet you at Srinagar share the taxi ride from there to Leh and from Leh i get another taxi to Manali.

Would this work for you? Please email me so we can be in touch.

Thanks,
