road conditions srinagar-leh now ???

hi,

i urgently need to know about the road conditions at the current time, in order to try to drive in, or book my plane ticket beforew leaving germany on 28. october

please help ...

ps. someone told me about early snows on the passes between manali and leh and advised me that jeeps are no longer available .

The problem is that road conditions can change very quickly at this time of year and 12 hours of snowfall can make all the difference. I really don't see how you can make arrangements until you arrive in Delhi, unless you decide that you are going to fly into Leh.

Can any of our Delhi members find out if the Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh roads are currently open?

Manali-Leh was closed till 5 days ago....won't suggest anyone should depend on it this time of the year..it will remain unpredictable.

I have no new on Srinagar-Leh

Road condition upto Jozila is well.But Jozila would be dificult to Cross. After that upto Leh No problem.

Its an old post but for the benefit of bagpackers -

SGR - LEH road closes in October and open in May every year. This road croses to 11700 feel above sea level and so do not under-estimate the height. if it snows after 31-Oct, road will be closed. Army will get and save people but not your vehicles after 31-Oct. it can snow in May as well. So go in last week of may upto sept end.
Avoid June end july as that is a bit rainy. Try to go in a group as else for miles you will not see a cab coming or going in opp direction. Restaurants(rather tea/ snack shops) and habitation will not be seen for miles together (50-60 Kms). So its better to co-ordinate with the tourism department or find groups on forum to travel together.

Hi everybody .. Just got an update from a friend in Delhi that the road has opened and by june july the road will be much clearer than now.. So I guess its better to plan out your respective trips rightaway .. Even I am travelling with my husband in the month of July..

?? So far we havenīt seen any news of the Zoji La being cleared, let alone the whole road . I got word from Leh a few days ago , no hints of this , nor on the official Ladakh site. Lots of late snows this year , same weather system that was responsible for the Siachen avalanche : Iīm thinking a late opening this year . Updates here




There are no set dates or certanties when the road opens and closes , but itīs often open a lot longer than popular belief. It was open when I left Leh on my latest winter visit in 2010 , last week in November. It closed last year on December 4th.

Openings are spread between mid-April and last days in May - last ten years here
