Prepaid mobiles in kashmir..

Is there any problem with prepaid connections in kashmir.?
I was told by one of my friend that only postpaid connections work there..
Is that true.?
I have a cellone connection with roaming..

Not sure how it works here, but AirTel is all over the place in J&K. We have AirCel pre-paid mobiles which we bought when we arrived.

Yes Roaming is not allowed in JNK and North East India as per TRAI policy. But prepaid connections are available there. Airtel, Aircel and may be Tata Indicom,Idea(not sure) is available. Only one has to provide required documents, photographs,address/nationality proofs and bingo , you are connected with the world.Your existing SIM will stop working once you enter the JNK circle, and the local one will stop working once you are out of JNK.

CC executives are human beings after all. They can do a mistake, or often operators' training to them is not appropriate. Anyways, if you carry passport sized photos, copies of passport/pan card/driving license you can get a prepaid SIM instantly. As JNK is economically under developed due to political issues/ terrorism, harsh topography, network strength may vary from places to places for any operator. Jammu, Srinagar and major towns are likely to have good signal strength. But dont expect good/any network in remote areas like Ladakh, Manali-Leh highway, Pangong Tso etc.

Before going to Kashmir and Ladakh, I made all the effort to convert my Vodaphone prepaid into a post-paid connection.
Wasted effort, didnt work at all

The following networks are available in J&K, in order of reliability and subscriber base, as well as coverage:
BSNL
Airtel
Aircel
Tata Indicomm
Reliance
Vodafone
Idea cellular, just being launched

Best to get a BSNL post-paid connection, from anywhere in India other than Delhi or Mumbai. Confirm with MTNL if roaming can be had on their post=paid SIMs in JK.
No pre-paid SIM from outside the state will work in JK.

I don't know anyone who is angry, per se, though I'm sure many are, but it's pretty annoying to suddenly have your trusty mobile rendered useless until you go through the eleventy million steps it'll likely require to get on a plan or whatever. I'm glad we have a landline as well!

Frankly, I'm surprised it happened so fast. I mean, everything else here runs on IST (Indian Standard Time) so I figured it'd take awhile to implement the change. But nope, as of today our phones are finished until we switch over, which my husband went today to get done.
