Good Morning everybody!

A friend and I are planning a 2 weeks trip from Delhi to Kashmir.

I have some questions and I hope all you experienced traveller are able to help me.

1) I know that there are direct flights from Delhi to Kashmir (Srinagar) but we are wondering if we can travel by land (preferably buses) instead? Has anyone done this before? can this even be done?

2) In Kashmir, the major attractions are Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam and Jammu, I also understand that travelling from one area to another can be achieved through taxis, can we travel from one place to another via buses? (my plan in Kashmir is Gulmarg-Srinagar-Sonamarg-Pahalgam-Srinagar)

3) We plan to go there in middle September 2012, is this a good time? What kind of weather will we be expecting?

4)I read about the conflict between India and China over Kashmir in the past, my friends and I are of Chinese decedent but not China Chinese, will there be any problem for us to travel in Kashmir?

5) We are planning to backpack around the country, so we intend to stay in budget hotel whenever possible, are there any recommendation in areas like Gulmarg, Srinagar and Pahalagam? and how much would they usually cost?

6) Finally, another idea of ours is to travel from Kashmir directly across to Tibet, China, can this be done? Is there any land cross between them in Kashmir?

Hope to hear from you all soon!

Cheers!
Ah Bai

Welcome to IMike!

I would try to answer your queries one-by-one:

1) Yes, daily a lot of people go to Srinagar by bus as buses are in plenty on the route. You can catch buses either from Delhi or Jammu.

2) Again YES! You may contact Tourist Reception Center. They conduct bus tour on this circuit. Your plan could be implemented.

3) It would be a good time to visit valley. It would be end of rainy season!
4) Conflict (!?) would not effect your tour & travel.

5) You would be getting budget hotels at Srinagar and Pahelgam. You can do day tour to Sonmarg and Gulmarg.

6) Most probably No, but I am not sure about it! Other members would be enlightening you on this.
Have a Happy Journey to India!

Hi Prakaant!

Thanks for your helpful tips.

Seems like the Tourist Reception Centre is the most important place i should visit in Kashmir, haha..

A few more questions.

1) How much will the bus ride from Delhi to Kashmir cost? and how long will it take?

2) Do i need to make any advance booking for my hotels, bus rides and stuff? or can i do it over there on the day itself?

3) What is the likely temperature Kashmir during my time of travel, September? do i have to bring along winter clothings?

Thanks!

Tourist Reception Centre is just beside the Interstate Bus Terminal.
September would be high season time, so, you may pre-book the accommodation. It will save your time but I prefer booking on the arrival.

Buses could be booked on arrival also.

You should keep woolen for nights

Hi Prakaant

Thanks for you advice once again,

How about the bus from Delhi to Srinagar? it can be booked on arrival too?

I have drafted an initial plan of my stay in Kashmir, can you take a look and give me some advice on how i should improve it?

- Travel from Delhi to Jammu - Stay over in Jammu for 1 day
- Travel from Jammu to Srinagar - Stay over 2 day
- Travel from Srinagar to Gulmarg - Stay over in Gulmarg for 1 day
- Travel from Gulmarg to Sonmarg (can this be done? or do i have to return to Srinagar first) - Stay over in Sonmarg for 1 day
- Travel from Sonmarg to Pahalgam - Stay over in Pahalgam for 1 day
- Balance 1 day travelling back to Srinagar and ready to fly back to Delhi.

If my time frame is too short, i can reduce my stay in Delhi and commit more time in Kashmir. I have 2 weeks in total.

Thanks!
Ah Bai

Yes, your itinerary looks fantastic (except few things) to me!
Delhi to Srinagar buses could be booked on arrival.
Just keep in mind, Delhi to Jammu and Jammu to Srinagar takes around 10 to 12 hours each by bus.
Delhi to Jammu is available by train also.
Gulmarg to Sonmarg goes via Srinagar, so you may plan a night stay in between at Srinagar!
You may do night halt at all the three places - Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Phelgam.

1) I know that there are direct flights from Delhi to Kashmir (Srinagar) but we are wondering if we can travel by land (preferably buses) instead? Has anyone done this before? can this even be done?

Ans From Delhi to Srinagar there is Direct bus Services or you can use the train From Delhi to jammu, and from jammu you have to hire a cab to drop you at srinagar at TRC

Ans SRTC bus run but they use Srinagar as center Point where from you get daily bus to Gulmarg, Phalagam, sonamarg and yousmarg

3) We plan to go there in middle September 2012, is this a good time? What kind of weather will we be expecting?
Its is off season in kashmir Valley but its good time to see apple season in kashmir valley

4)I read about the conflict between India and China over Kashmir in the past, my friends and I are of Chinese decedent but not China Chinese, will there be any problem for us to travel in Kashmir?

here is conflict between pakistan and india not with the China, you have no worry that you are Chinese citizen

5) We are planning to backpack around the country, so we intend to stay in budget hotel whenever possible, are there any recommendation in areas like Gulmarg, Srinagar and Pahalagam? and how much would they usually cost?
Srinagar Try Lonely Guest House , Phalagam zabrina Guest house,Shalimar Guest house and Gulmarg there is Rose wood hut, zum zumm

6) Finally, another idea of ours is to travel from Kashmir directly across to Tibet, China, can this be done? Is there any land cross between them in Kashmir?

This is not possible

Warm regards

To me also, it looks okay!

BTW, if you wish, you may steal one or two day from Delhi and give it to Yousmarg during your Srinagar stay! It would be done during day-time!! That means, leave Srinagar early morning and return Srinagar by 6 - 6.30 PM.

For me, Pahelgam can be done with one night stay. Reach there by 11 AM and leave the place next day by 3 PM.

Hi kashmir1 and Prakaant

So sorry that I took so long to reply since your last advice, I was caught up with loads of work lately.

Thanks for all the advice both of you have given me so far, I am thinking of making some slight adjustment to my initial plan, i hope to include Sri Vaishno Devi on my way from Jammu to Srinagar.

Can you let me know if this can be done or do I have to make a 1 day trip to Vaishno Devi from Jammu and back then proceed up to Srinagar from Jammu.

Thanks!
