Peace festival in Leh: July 31 - Aug 1

For all of you heading north, be aware the Kashmir peace festival has been moved to Leh in Ladakh, and will be held July 31 - Aug 1. Originally planned for Srinagar (but moved for safety) and to be 3 days (but shortened to 2 as the Dalai Lama does a visit to Leh on Aug 2).
Book your flights/buses/hotel soon, it's quite busy here this summer. More at http://www.kashmirpeacefestival.com.

Thanks for the info Jeroen - we won't be arriving until about the 7th of August.

I guess things won't be so busy by then and anyway I'm sure there's always room for a couple more

Thank you Jeroen,

we will be arriving in delhi on 30th July and heading north by bus so i think we'll arrive too late but anyway it's nice to see there are some actions (and people involved in them) looking forward nice aims such this one.

On the other hand, Alan D how are you going to Leh? by car/taxi/bus or you'll go by air?

We are 3 guys a little tired to go around himalayas by bus crushed in the seat for hours. We are thinking in share a taxi from Manali to Leh in order to travel more comfortable and to stop everytime we see a place it's worth to take a picture/walk/drink a chai... i mean, enjoy it. If anybody wants to share the taxi with us... i supose we will try to leave Manali towards Leh around 4th-5th August.

See you,

ploma

I think we will take the Himachal Pradesh state luxury bus like we did last time - it's pretty comfortable... experienced drivers, no standing passengers and good all round visibility. They stop at various places along the way for food and for the driver to have a rest and it takes two days to reach Leh.

I'm not sure about the taxis/jeeps - in theory you should be able to call the stops but I think some of the drivers are keen to get to Leh as quickly as possible. You might like to read Vistet's post from a couple of years ago. If you take a taxi/jeep make sure that the driver will stop when asked and that the journey will take at least 2 days.

It seems likely we are all going to be in Leh about the same time so perhaps we could meet up somewhere for a coffee/beer?

Would anybody here know what the line up is ..... when I met the guy I was told its international and Indian as well ....... some stuff like Ben harper and Tea Party and Tex perkins do the International Line up and Indian ocean Trilok gurtu complete the high end line up .... It would be amazing to catch them live at the polo grounds in Leh ...... Any other info avalable ?

Hello!

I'll keep in mind your suggestion to take the HP state luxury bus to Leh, it's really comfortable??? as the journey is divided in two parts and you can "rest" in the tent camp maybe is not that hard. Anyway i'll choose in Manali itself but if i'll take the taxi i'll check your advises. After all i've a good friend in old manali and i'll also listen his advises.

And yes it seems there will be some IM's in Ladakh at the begining of august, i don't know how it goes (i'm pretty new in this web-community) but maybe we can meet for a coffee/beer (i'll take a chai/tea or maybe i should say butter tea). why not?

I think it's still to early to talk about dates (i'm still in Barcelona!!!) but i'll keep in the net till Manali at least.

see you,

ploma

Festival:
The lineup is yet unknown (not heard the above but have heard unlikely rumours of the Asian Dub Foundation) and the Aussie organisers I met here are still very relaxed about everything

Transport:
there are lots and lots of jeeps crossing over from Manali, should not be such a problem to get a seat. Mind you, I heard from people that came by bus that the driver lets the foreigners out at a tentcamp at Sanchu that is isolated and 250Rs per night, food very expensive... he then drives on and lets the Indians sleep at the tents that are only 20-30Rs. If stopping at Sanchu, demand to sleep at the group of 'parachute tents' near the police checkpoint - cheap + friendly. I slept at Pang (one pass further) which is about 30Rs/person and less wind-swept as it's in a narrow valley. Thick blankets, good food... had a great night despite the cold. Get prepared to face lots of faeces in the fields behind the tents...
