Leh-Srinagar road status - how reliable, generally, close to opening?

Hi all,

I'm hopefully going to Leh & Dharamsala over the next week (see here: Last week in India - travel advice? Leh-Srinagar-Jammu-Dharamsala? ) but I am curious about Srinagar. I have heard the drive from Leh to Srinagar is beautiful.

According to this 26-Apr post -- http://www.tribuneindia.com/2011/20110427/j&k.htm#16 -- the route is to be open "soon next week" -- so I read that to mean perhaps as soon as 2-May.

My question is, how reliable do you think this information is? How likely will it be that I could get a jeep or a bus from Leh to Srinagar almost as soon as the road opens? Is it the height of foolishness to assume that would be possible? Does the road frequently close and reopen so close to the beginning of summer, owing to more snow, avalanches, etc.?

Thanks in advance for any advice on this road.

The road is open now ( see my blog below ) and that means that there are jeeps and trucks running with the first fresh food since the winter. The J&K state buses should be running now or any day as well - that´s the meaning of the status info on the Leh web site : open to all classes of vehicles.

As for road closures the first weeks after opening .. well , sometimes it happens. Last year was a ***** , but most of the time this resolves in a day or two. Bring some warm clothes , and some munchies to tide you over a long night up in the passes.

Situation in Srinagar seems more or less calm now , but you´ll need to keep your ear to to the ground for changes. Otherwise you have my take on the road here : Chilling in Kargil


There is also even a chance that the Manali-Leh road opens at the end of your stay in Manali - so far I haven´t heard any indications to if we could expect a normal or late opening this year.

Leh road is officially open.And buses as well as jeeps r going to leh as well as coming from leh to srinagar.
Yes view is nice from srinagar to leh It's looking beautiful...

Yes the road is offically open now but if the weather goes wrong it might be closed as there is still lot of snow atop Zojila Pass.

Officially the Road is open, But if the Weather changes the government close the road, The leh Srinagar Road is complete depend on the weather, check the Weather forecast before taking any Decision

not only is it open it has been widened for T72 tanks(from 1/5/2011)
