Hi All,

Me and my wife are planning to go to Kashmir on October 1st week this year. I have read many threads and bit confuse about my trip. I will share my plan, please correct me with your valuable suggestions.

One of my relative now staying in Srinagar [for an official tour] and he will be there till Mid of October. He is staying in a guest house. He has insisted us to come to Srinagar and stay with him for a week and visit the near by places.

What I think - I think it is a good opportunity, as I can save some money by staying in his guest house. So I have planned as below.

26th Sep Thu - Start from Bangalore to Delhi by Flight. Stay in my cousin's house.
27th Sep Fri - Visit Agra and See Tajmahal and come back to Delhi.
28th Sep Sat - Take flight to Srinagar. Reach Srinagar and stay till 8th of Oct. I can stay in Kashmir for all most 10 days.

What my confusion is - I heard about 4 must see places in Kashmir.

1. Srinagar and near by Places like Dal lake, gardens etc.
2. Gulmarg
3. Sonmarg
4. Pahalgam

Please suggest if I can stay in Srinagar and visit other places and come back to Srinagar in evening. I can hire a Taxi for my entire trip. As this is a most awaited trip for me and I wanted this to be memorable. Also it will be a great help if you provide me the approximate time it will take to reach Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Pahalgam from Srinagar.

I see many mates have suggested to stay in Pahalgam and Sonmarg for a day or two to enjoy the trip.

Options -
Plan 1 - Less Expensive.
Stay in Guest house and hire a Taxi visit all 4 places and come back.

Plan 2 - Bit Expensive
Stay in guest house hire Taxi visit Srinagar locally and go to Gulmarg and come back to Srinagar.
Take the Taxi to Sonmarg - Search a Hotel and Spend 2 days 1 Night.
Take the Taxi to Phalgam - Search a Hotel and spend 2 days 1 Night.
Come back to Srinagar.

Plan 3 - Much Expensive
Plan it through a Trip organizer and where they will provide Lodging and Fooding and Transport.

Please suggest the best thing, I can plan in these 10 days with less cost involve. How you plan if you were in my place. Please suggest an itinerary.

Thanks in Advance!!!

Smile Welcome to IM...

Hi dasswasti,

I have read your post and considering your budget I think you can go with PLAN 2 with a little modification.

28th Sep : Reach Srinagar. May go for a shikara ride if energy permits.
29th & 30th Sep : Srinagar local sight seeing.
  1. Shankar Acharya Temple (This is a must go because you can see the whole dal lake and the city of Srinagar from the temple)
  2. Different gardens except the Tulip Garden which will not be open at that time - Chashme Shahi, Nishaat bagh etc.
  3. Pari Mahal
  4. HazratBal Shrine
1st Oct : Go to Gulmarg (Appx. 52Kms from Srinagar). It will take you around 1.5hrs to reach there. In October you will not get much snow there. So go straight for the gondola ride. I think both phases of gondola will be open at that time. You will get snow up their. It will be better if you reach the gondola ticket counter within 10AM due to the rush. The price of the tickets are Rs. 400 for 1st phase and Rs. 600 for 2nd phase. Check here : Gulmar Gondola Tickets
The whole gondola return trip will be of approximately 3hrs. You can have lunch in Gulmarg but it will be a little costly. You may also ask the driver to take you down to Tangmarg for lunch which will be comparatively cheaper i guess. after lunch come back to Srinagar.
2nd Oct : Go to Sonmarg (Appx. 80Kms from Srinagar). I think it will take you around 2.5-3hrs to reach there. I will not be able to tell you about Sonmarg much because I personally could not go there when I visited Kashmir last year April as the roads were closed. But I have heard the road to Sonmarg is beautiful and Sonmarg is cleaner than Gulmarg. Thajiwas glacier and Zoji-la pass are things to see in Sonmarg. Give it a try and tell me how it is.
3rd Oct & 4th Oct : Go to Pahalgam(Appx. 100Kms - 3-3.5Hrs from Srinagar) and stay there for 2 nights. Places to see in Pahalgam are Chandanwadi, Betaab Valley, Baisaran etc. Go to Aru Valley(12Kms/half an hour from Pahalgam) on the second day. It is a beautiful peaceful village with awesome beauty. You can also visit higher altitudes from Aru by hiring pony from there. KEEP IN MIND that in Pahalgam you can not take your hired car for sight-seeing. You have to hire local cab for that.
5th Oct : Come back to Srinagar. May consider this as a rest day or go around local market place.

Hope I could answer all your questions. You can also refer to my trip report of Kashmir for pictures and details. Do tell us what you planned finally and share your experiences after the trip.

Perfect suggestion SandeepS. Anybody who goes through a TR of Ashish Uncle hardly comes up with any question. Such beautifully written and informative is his TR.

I'm writing whatever I read from this Forum, even I didnt visited Kashmir, planning for April 2nd week.

My reasons are as follows
Upto March end, roads might not be opened for commuting, like sonamarg, yusmarg etc, even for Gulmarg we may need to take another vehicle with chained tyres from Tangmarg to Gondola station,

By April 1st/2nd week almost all the roads will be opened (from what I understand from different threads here in this forum), and the snow is fresh and we can enjoy it to the full extent and April is like moderate season.

after April end ie May, it will be like peak season and the tariffs will go high and the snow will be like muddy as the places attract so many tourists by this time (again this is what I heard)

And this is more like my personal views, look for senior members comments

Hi Dasswasti!

I am planning Kashmir trip from last 2 years but unfortunately could not materialize due to official and personal priorities.
This time in August is fixed now. All the formalities has been done.

Regarding your perspective, I believe Kashmir is always beautiful round the year. It turns out to be green, white and yellow shades. Now, it depends on the personal choice. For me, playing in snow is just like a fast food. One time enjoy and after that you have to bear.
Rainy season is my favourite that full of greenery, snow capped mountains, blue water streams, birds etc Its my version of heaven so getting towards
For you, its your call!!!

Regards
Sandeep

Hi dasswasti,

I think the perfect time for you to visit kashmir will be 1st-2nd week of April. At that time you will get both snow and also greenery in kashmir like sandeep said. You will get the taste of both.

Guys,

I need your suggestion.

Hi Guys,

I am bit confused between Srinagar/Gulmarg/Pahalgam and Narkanda/Rackcham/Chitkul/Kalpa (Himachal Pradesh) during March end.

My Priority is to see Snow, Snow, Snow and Scenic view. I have seen some photographs of the Rackcham/Chitkul/Kalpa during march end and I love it.
Hunting for snow - Kinnaur March 2013

But don't know much about Kashmir during this time.
