There's no problem with night-time travel. People drive all the time all over the place at night here. My husband just drove overnight from Ladakh to Srinagar 10 days ago.

i can offer help with some of your queries - i was in kashmir in may this year:

3. use local transport instead, perfectly safe and cheap.
4. yes, but most people tend to go home come late evening.
6. my friends there tell me it is pleasant throughout the day and cool at night in september.
7. there are old posts on this topic - look them up. a mr krishna from bangalore had a local person's details in one - rs400 or so for a room in his home in central srinagar (shared bath).
8. i had the best veg food ever at krishna dhaba - everyone in srinagar knows where it is.
