OP this kind of question is very difficult to answer altho attempts had been made in the past. I had been to Kashmir, so did many people... many feel that violence has greatly reduced but an untoward incident can always happen... as it happened a few days back in Delhi. In my opinion postponing ur trip makes no sense... if you are worried & think that you will be tense through out your trip then better choose another destination.

Hey Warnesus
Kashmir is just awesome. There is not much problem there, so many people Indians and foreigners have been going there again. I think you should not worry about some such stray incidents, the place is so beautiful and people there are friendly and very good. If you go there, you will thank me for my suggestion. Just treat me a beer, I am in Mumbai! rgds Rajiv |

Kasmir is unsafe...this is true.
Better avoid it...wanna take chance..GULMARG and skiing there is fine and this also goes on thin line....so depends on you how you feel about being in a area where grenade attacks, landmines and firing exists !! |

Unsafe
They say Delhi is unsafe, but friends say everything is cool there.
Is Srinagar in some sort of war zone. Breakaway faction trying to break peace once in a while happens but it depends who is in control. What breakways strike at will there? But then how does the local economy survive, 'cause i heard tourism is best earner there? All views welcome! Tks ![]() |

Hi,
This is the most important point on Kashmir. Who is the target? In my personal experience (very short staying) and my friends those who are in travel and tourism business (so comparatively knowledgeable because they are frequent visitors), Govt. organizations and govt. vehicles are the prime targets of the terrorists not the tourists. It is true that the son of the soil – Kashmiri Pandits is no more there so the type of violence and the motto is different there in Kashmir (unlike it was in Punjab). But one thing is absolutely clear that if terrorist activities affect tourism industry, the negative response will supersede over the lucrative call for Jihad (so called). After almost two decades of suffering the local economy is experiencing the sweet taste of tourist money once again. So if you stay away from Govt. vehicles or army posts it is better. And trust those local people when they ask you not to go somewhere during any specific time (like – Lalchowk during evening). I don’t find any reason to discourage you. But yes, plz don’t forget to get the LATEST news before landing. Wish you a very safe and happy traveling. |

What is safe?
warnesus,
Really where is safe? London, Delhi, Bali, Egypt... they all have had bombs go off in the last year. You can not let that stop you from travelling and experiencing life. I have been to Kashmir, including Srinagar, 5 times since July 2005 and it is fine. Just take your normal travel precautions and stay clear of govt vehicles or army posts and you will have an amazing time. A friend of mine just came of a houseboat on Dal Lake yesterday and he had a great time. At the end of the day, take necessary precautions, follow your heart and have a good time. |

Interesting discussion what to think safe or unsafe.
Generally it depends on what your perceptions of frontier region are. If you expect restrictions on every corner, rifled soldiers standing in every 10 meters even in countryside you can decide for yourself. Don't forget if you go by car - in Kasmir there are many many authorised and unauthorised blockpoints with pleasant or unpleasant checks. All give the air of effectively occupied country. About possibility of terrorist attacks. They are usually seasonable and possible to predict only for keen observers of Kashmir conflict. Otherwise it's luck or misfortune. When I tried to leave Srinagar last autumn I went to Lal Chawk (where shared jeeps to Jammu terminate) and gone. Next morning the same time on Lal Chawk there was a grenade attack with civilian casualties. |

Just go ahead with your plan..... as you have decided ...... & just keep a few things in mind .........
......Dont spend too much time in Dal Gate Area or near Lal Chowk (square), as these are the area most hit by the blasts and such things ........ If you are staying in Houseboat stay in Dal lake for lesser time and prefer staying in Nagin Lake, as nagi lake is much cleaner compared to Dal lake and its safer too. If you are taking a stroll in Srinagar and you see a few Military Personnel together or an Army Post etc. ..... stay away ...... as those are under the terrorist's target. Gulmarg, Sonamarg & Pahalgaum are safer......... ............ it's really "Heaven on Earth" |

i was in srinagar and pahal gam for ten days in june 06. yes, there were three attacks - one granade, two mine - and yes, people were injured and killed. but i had a great vacation - i knew some locals and was in their company mostly - so it was alright. they advised me on places that they thought were unsafe and so, to be avoided - i followed their advice and came home safely, with only pleasant memories (not wounds). it's a lot to do with luck as well. i would keep a close watch on the current news and see how you feel - there is a lot of armed presence everywhere (every ten metres sounds about right) and it can be disconcerting.
