Hello everyone!
I finalized on a trip from Leh to Jammu in early June,just a few days back[ Anyone heading to Spiti-Ladakh-Jammu & Kashmir in late May/Early June?Confirm it here ]; And just today,I was shocked to hear the news about Pakistani army firing along the border,and India calling for a flag meeting,due to the sudden cease fire by their Pak counterpart,unfortunately all happening in the state of Jammu & Kashmir which I am sure must have risen the tension in that part of the country all of a sudden; So,I would like to know would it really be safe to travel the distance in that region during that time? Would tourists not be hampered due to this? And,if anyone else is doing the trip,please do let me know about it,and your feelings on the same; And if you people are thinking of changing your plans or not; |

Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts on the same;
Infact,I was just wondering, was this had to be done now, after months of considerable peace in the region; You know,have been planning this trip for so long,and seeing anything that might put it on hold,scares me a lot; |

Kashmir is more or less a safe place. Of course there are the occasional terrorist bombings/killings but they generally do not target tourists. However the scenic beauty is worth it.

My fiance spoke with his family about 3 or 4 days ago (they're in Srinagar and his brother goes to Ladakh a lot for business) and they said it's very, very quiet right now. The Pak incident caused a bit of a ripple of course, but it's been very peaceful since then. I shouldn't worry

Jammu and Kashmir is safer right now than at any time in recent years. Security has been heightened for the next 8 weeks, in view of the annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath shrine, which sees an influx of several hundred thousand people.

Check out recent news here. As for tourists not being targeted , let´s hope all of it soon is history , but it hasn´t been so in recent years : the Tourist Reception Centre for example has been targeted in ´00, ´05 and ´06 , and ´06 was a bad year for everyone.

Just got back from kashmir... It's divine and prolly much safer than a walk in bondi at night. I was pleasantly surprised that it's that safe and peaceful. Initally planned to stay there for 4 nights ended up scraping the rest of my itinary and just stayed there for the whole trip.
I stayed in Pahalgam for most of my stay and i loved it. I was travelling by myself and as a female traveller i was equipped with all sort of 'self protection' but the folks at the inn i'm staying took care of me so well and the neighbours are so welcoming that on most afternoon after my hike i ended up visiting the local families for kashmiri teas and cookies. Didn't like Srinagar so much, but not because of the safety more just because it's a more bustling small city with enermous dust quantity than a village. |

Hi there, I'm thinking of heading to Kashmir in July. I'll be going alone so am comforted by your post! Could you let me know the name of the guest house you stayed at in Pahalgam? Also welcome any other tips for a girl travelling along from Delhi to Kashmir.
Cheers, Ailsa |

Hi Alisa, I'm also thinking of heading to Kashmir in July. I hear wonderful things about Dal Lake. I'd like to explore Ladakh, as well, and may stick to that depending on the security situation. I'm glad that I found IndiaMike to keep up to date.
Cheers, Xander |

I also came back from Srinagar 3 days ago.
I am not sure if all the soldiers you see there can guarantee the security. I think this is just to deterr the unprepared and unexperienced subversive forces. As everywhere in the world a large number of soldiers alone can not guarantee for peace. I was able to speak with some people of the local authorities and also from European embassies and all of them were saying that Kashmir is safe for tourists as long you dont leave the tourist paths. I would go back directly but everyone should keep in mind that 100 percent security will never be achieved but nevertheless one shouldnt be too scared about the security situation in Kashmir. |

Hello everyone!
Just to let you all know that Kashmir is very much trouble free and a safe zone for tourists at least right at the moment,as I am fresh from a visit over there and would suggest all of you to continue with your previous plans,if you have any for Kashmir travel; It's true that one would see an armed soldier for every square inch one would move there,but still I would say,those may not be too much of a cause of concern,as tourists are flooding the region despite all that; And to missailsa,if you still searching for a suitable homely guest house,just PM me; I found one at Pahalgaum where I stayed for a while,and I can also help you with your over night stays in Sonmarg,Gulmarg,Sri Nagar,Kargil or even Leh and Zanskar! |
