Himalayas this winter?
Hello all,
I'm planning to come down to India sometime in the beginning of December and really want to do some travelling somewhere up north. I was planning on a delhi-Srinagar-Leh-Delhi trip, for around 10 days. But since it will be mid-december when I start out, will it be worth it? In the sense that, will it be so chilly and cold that I won't be able to venture out and everything will be snow covered? What temperatures can I expect? Also, if this is the case, can anyone suggest me a good place to enjoy the Himalayas. I don't need any hardcore trekking. Just some decent light treks in order to enjoy the place and relax. I have already been to Uttaranchal, so would prefer something different this time. Will be really grateful! thanks! rz |

Trekking in December-Few Options
December is bit colder for trekking and as weather is not much predictable-I would suggest you not to try hights.
You can best do trekking in Himachal Pradesh and some famous walkable places are: Triund -Lahesh Caves: Route is from Macleod Ganj ( Dharamshala) and by this time you will not find any shop which could cater food and drinks-up there. So have to look for food, tent and fuel. Pulga-Kheer Ganga: Although this valley has got bad name due to drugs. But you can go upto Khir Ganga which is nice place. ( Used to be-before this drug menace ! ) Do not go alone anywhere-always hire someone local. This should be your last option. This area is called Parvati Valley and route is from Bhuntar which is on national highway of KULLU-MANALI. You reach Manikaran and from there you can reach PULGA ( Village ) and next day visit KHEER GANGA. But in nut shell- I would suggest that trekking in remote region in Himachal-is not a good idea...reports are os heavy snow fall in upper reaches. This brings the temp. down-even in planes of Punjab....better avoid ! |

rzoster !
As I said in my earlier reply- you can not travel in Dec. to Leh by road. Even traffic on Jammu - Siringar is onmercy of weather.Fog, Rain ..snowfall can stop life anywhere. I want to suggest-donot try to visit extreme NORTH. You can easily enjoy comfortably to place like: AMRITSAR-DHARAMAHSALA-SHIMLA-MANALI-JIM CORBETT SANCTUARY-HARIDWAR-TAJ MAHAL-JAIPUR-UDAIPUR-JODHPUR etc etc. Traveling in lower mountains can also see some rain or fog in Dec. So do not try to travel in remote and high !! |
