i have done leh once, but done uttrakhand extensively
look, it will be a long distance you need to cover. you will be driving around 250-275 km/day. since you have 9 yrs of driving experience you know hw comfortable bikes are. with pillion and luggage 150/180cc may perform well if the condition of bike is nice (also new).
karol bagh is the auto hub where you can get bikes on hire.
but be careful while dealing....

@mahesh, you can get bullets on hire for around 500-800/day. depending upon model, plus advance(security) which may vary between 15k-30k . dont know rates for other bikes

Tilak,

Just because you are not aware of friends in your circle doing leh with pillion does not mean 150/180/220 cc bikes are incapable.

MPM,

You can PM vishwaschettri on xbhp.com (if i recall right). Done on a unicorn twice, second time with pillion afaik. Or finish ten posts, then Pm me for more. Please DONT buy into the bullet myth. Its just another bike.

know many people who have done singly but not with a pillion.
Can you have borrow a Bullet off a friend and see how you manage the bike prior to your trip.

They are OK once you have some practice. The ride from Delhi to Manali will take you 2 days so you will gain some experience and get the feel for the bike in this distance.

Your statement in the first section is contradictory with the second. Point is, you're wrong. I hate to be rude. But I have seen enough posts and you are ranging from outright dismissive to now granting them a chance if the bike is new. I mean - sorry! not done. Its ok to love your bike to bits, not to diss others'!

Here is an example:

(vishwaschettri)

If you have any remainder doubts, I'd be glad to host vishwas and have you over for in depth discussion with data and pictures. But please, don't confuse newbies into spending money when they have a reasonable bike. Esp coming from someone with your experience and breadth!

Two days? Sir, most people do it in 1 and just save the timing for Manali to Leh where the fun is!

Why rush, riding is about enjoying yourself and seeing the scenery. Not overdoing it, getting tired and possibly having an accident.

a friend n I wanna take a 12-15 day bike trip from delhi to leh via manali in 2010. we plan to hire the bike from delhi and carry onwards. We're both novices who have ridden bike for 9 of the 25 yrs of our lives but never taken such a trip....

I have done this trip, over the same amount of time.

Delhi - Manali - Leh - (Khardungla)- Kargil - Srinagar - Jammu - Delhi.

I stopped in Manali for 1 day, Leh for 2 days and Srinagar for 2 days. There was no rush to get to Manali, I took my time and took 2 days. I took my time from Manali - Leh, 3 days stayed at Jispa and Sarchu on the way. 1 day to Kargil, 1 day to Srinagar 3 days to get back, Srinagar - Delhi.
