Exclamation Help on Bike Trip From Delhi To Leh In 2010

a friend n I wanna take a 12-15 day bike trip from delhi to leh via manali in 2010. we plan to hire the bike from delhi and carry onwards. We're both novices who have ridden bike for 9 of the 25 yrs of our lives but never taken such a trip....

We needed to know:
1.when is the earliest it is possible to leave(considering most of the roads open only after june)
2.what would be the approx cost/person for such a trip (bike rent/fuel cost/boarding n lodging)
3.where would we get the bike on rent from (reputed dealer/s in delhi)
4.Is a honda unicorn/bajaj pulsar suitable for such a trip(we're not really accustomed to the bullet)
5.Can two ppl carry out such a trip on a single bike?
6.Is a tent an essential(considering were both gonna be on 1 bike..if possible)
7.As we we reach remote locations can we charge cell phones, torchlights, etc.

1.End of May into June should be Ok
2.21,000 Inr or less
3.Enfield at 900 INR per day or less
4.Bullet is OK, reliable if hired from good dealer
5.Yes, if 500cc
6.Not needed
7.You can charge phones etc at most places you stay at.

I did this trip in June/July the total cost incl flights etc from UK was less than 55,000 INR in total. As an Indian you can cut the costs of food and accommodation.

IŽd say you have a 90 % chance of the road being open first week in June. Road updates here

@MPM, hope you got answers from mike's post.
just to add, since you 2 ppl plan to go on a single bike + lods of luggage, then only BULL 500 can make you achieve this. if you go single single then you can do it on pulser, unicorn also. you need to cross heights @ 18000ft asl, and some rough roads also. do carry some technical knowledge also like changing of snapped wires, handling flat tire etc.

Delhi - bike rental

Hi Mike Cork,

We're from Pune & any info on where we'd get reliable bikes on rent in Delhi would be appreciated. Also you've earlier mentioned about the rent (approx 900INR/day )but whats the deposit like on a 500cc bullet? Also any idea on whats the approx rent & deposit for 2 150cc bikes?

Thanx a lot!!!

Please don't propogate wrong ideas here. I have seen two people on a bajaj chetak on the route. Most bikes >=150cc will do it just fine. But yes, the torque of a bull 500 is beyond compare. Take the bull 500 for the joy, but not as a necessity!

Plus small bikes being more fuel efficient can reduce the load of carrying extra fuel.

BTW is extra fuel needed to be carried along on bullet on rohtang - leh strech.

Question 150cc bike with pillion for leh to ladakh trip....

Hey All,

Thanks for the inputs...although now we're confused as to taking a small 150CC or a bullet...

Truth be told we've never ridden a bullet much and are concerned with handling the monster on these roads......

If anyone out there has taken this route on a 150cc bike with a pillion (or knows someone who has), please reply....

Awaiting eagerly...

DONT take Bull if you never drove it & that too on leh route. it needs lots of courage & passion.
you can opt for avenger, pulser, or any other you find suitable.
but with pillion you may find tough at many places.
know many people who have done singly but not with a pillion.

Hey mahesh,
We're planning to go from pune - delhi by train n then take a bike on hire. We're still nnot sure on the dates but will try to leave asa the roads open...

Hey Tilak,
looks like u've done this trip a few times... is it that two ppl on a 150/180cc street bike wont be very comfortable or that the bike wont perform well in these conditions? Also, do u know any places in delhi that rent out bikes?
