You are too early !! The roads to Leh won't be open in early May. For example, last year, the first government bus of the season went from Manali to Leh on the 1st of July. Jeeps a little earlier.

There is actually 2 roads to reach Leh .

1) Manali - Leh Road via Keylong takes 2 days

2) Srinagar - Leh via kargil takes 2 days

The third option is Shimla - Kalpa - Nako - Tabo - Kunzum Pass - Keylong - Leh. Atleast 3days.

From Hardwar you can opt for any one of the above.

It's funny that many people still think of Himalayas as something flat and insignificant (by square) on map and compose impossible itineraries. Once I took bus from Dehradun to Ranikhet (only 3-4 hours from Nainital). Journey took incredible and horrible 17 hrs! Though these towns seemed so close to each other if you look on map of Uttaranchal.

ya- this happens with me years back...on my first introduction to KUMAON HIMALAYAS. I took bus from Bareily but it reaches RANIKHET late evening- months later,I came to know that it was a village route bus which took me to almost every village of the region..( Hee heeee heeee )

These are NON -AVOIDABLE happenings and once we set foot out from HOME for some travel-some unexpected always happen and I think SHOULD happen..beacuse these are those memories which stay in mind and soul.

Coming to going LEH by road-much has been said and explained and I think thats enough.
Josh ! I do not know about those craftsmen although had been there many many times...( it make me feel bore now ! ) But when you land there do ask someone in HALL BAZAAAR area.
OLD city is near GOLDEN TEMPLE-you can find a lot in those small, snake like streets !!
