going to Leh via Srinagar ?

We are in great doubt about this journey ! What is certain is our arrival in Delhi on July 14th. We could not yet get a flight to Leh and it seems hardly possible in the future. We thought of going by train to Jammu, then by bus to Srinagar. A few days there then hop on a bus to Leh. But it seems nobody is doing this route. Why is it so ? Is the road dangerous along the border ? Anybody can suggest which is the best way to go ? We would rather not take the Manali Leh twice. Any suggestion is welcome !

I think:

Jammu is not very popular tourist destination in J&K and many people try to fly direct to Srinagar or Leh

this is what I heard- the bus route between Jammu and Srinager is quite dangerous ie there are many driving accidents (ie not shooting), either because of poor quality buses or driving on a difficult stretch of the road

you cah hire a private taxi for Jammu-Srinagar route or fly Jammu-Srinagar

The bus journey between Srinagar and Leh takes two days (?)with a stopover in Kargil... Kargil is where the last Indo-Pak war was fought. may be that is why this trip is not as popular as Manali-Leh? but I am sure it is as scenic as the latter!

I don't beleive the flights to Leh are already booked for July!!! which airline did you try? Jet Airways have flights and they seem to give foreigners ie who pay $ price priority on bookings... did you try them?

BTW Srinagar is wonderful. And so different from Jammu and Leh. You will have a great time if you do the overland route!!

That route is great if grueling. There were fantastic sights on the way but it is best done by the young at heart. I flew back..
