Getting to Leh by road
I have seen a lot of people on here reccomend a shared jeep from manali to leh, which seems to be a reasonable price, and (relatively) more comfortable than a bus, and probably more enjoyable. Please correct me if I am wrong.
My question is, how easy is it to arrange a shared jeep? I am travelling on my own. On arrival in Manali will it be simple enough to organise, or will I be at the mercy of whether other travellers want to make the trip the next day? Or can this be sorted out beforehand? If anyone has any other general advice on the route (i plan to take a plane back for the sake of time), I would appreciate it. I currently intend to arrive in Manali on 1 September, and if possible leave for Leh (with a stopover at Sachu right?) the next day, returning on the 7th. |

It is easy to do it after coming to Manali, walk in to any travel agent and they will sell you one ticket for a seat. It you are going by the travel agent arrangement the jeeps are crowded. Here is how my journey by road turned out to be in 2005.

I guess if you go by a jeep there is no overnight halt. They just have a couple of breaks for 20 minutes.
If you go by bus then there is a overnight halt at Keylong. |
