escape to kashmir

i will be in the punjab in may (after a stint in himachal) and want to know what the best way of getting to srinagar will be - flight from amritsar/jammu? or take a car from jammu? has anyone done the road journey? how long would it take?

a while ago, someone posted a thread about trains going to kashmir - any progress?

there is a flight from jammu to srinagar on deccan airlines - rs2500 and on jet airways - rs2750 (one way fares).

Hello Anar,

We have travelled from Jammu to Srinagr by road in end dec07. It takes about 9 hours. We paid Rs.1000/- for the entire middle seat of the sumo ( 2 adults and a 7 year old). The journey was exhausting but exciting. wouldnt do it any other way. We left jammu @ 11:00 am and that was a bit late. Try to leave earlier by 7:00 am or so. The landscape changes as you go from green jammu to Snowy Kashmir & the Banihal tunnel ( jawahar tunnel) is some thing to be experianced. the driver was good & safe & this is important.

May will be the peak tourist time so things will be crowded in srinagar
