by road between srinagar and leh: timings
Hi..
I have thought of spending the 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st of Nov'09 in Leh.. I have to reach there from vadodara, Gujarat.. Say, if i reach srinagar on 15th in the afternoon at 1 pm, do i have any chances of reaching leh on 16th eve.. If not, can anyone suggest the timing of departure from srinagar, so that i reach leh on 16th evening..? If someone can list the timings of the buses that start from srinagar and their corresponding arrival time in Leh, it would be really helpful... thank you.. regards, kaush |

Buses doing that route can be arduous, most people opt for private jeeps. All things being equal, these usually leave at 4AM and arrive the next evening at Leh, passing through Kargil. Although really, I've no idea what the road conditions would be like from SRN to LEH during those times. The 'highway' is fairly decent during in Summer, but has its rough patches and certainly some very high passes. Be aware that temperatures can apparently plummet -40C during the winter in certain regions of Ladakh, LEH included.
Leh will be like a ghost town, with almost no tourists during that region and most guesthouses will be closed. However some do remain open all year round, but expect to pay higher rates if you require a heated room. The only way back, I presume, would be the same way you came. The southern highway to Manali would be pretty tough going at the end of November and officially closed. This apparently means that the Indian army will refuse to mount any rescue operation. You should try and get some first hand information of the conditions for the SRN/LEH highway during the end of November. Personally I would love to visit Leh during in Winter, simply because it is rammed with tourists during in the Summer. Good Luck and let me know if you need a trustworthy houseboat owner in SRN. |

Buses do it with a overnight stay in Kargil . That night is the key factor in altitude acclimatization , you dont really win one more effective day in Leh by doing a fifteen to twenty hour run with the jeeps.

"Highly exaggerated : night time temperatures in Leh barely dropped below -20 last winter , lot warmer in the day time.
" Does it make a difference..A 20 degree celsius relief but hardly any warmth to make things better |

My son just told me it was a 16 hour trip to Leh from Srinagar on his trip, and yes, weather could be a factor in late November. My son went to Leh in May and returned at the end of June during good road conditions ("good" being relative LOL).
My son also said the stop in Kargil on his trip was only a few minutes and still it was 16 hours. This was by hired jeep, btw. |

Its a break journey by bus..morning 5 from srngr to kargil..overnight stay at kargil and morning 5 a bus from kargil to leh..
I have heard that buses do run even during difficult months.. My co-traveller during my last trip from kargil to leh told me he once did the trip in jan and their was 5 feet snow all across... Can be a bit exaggerated but I do trust the locals |

A deluxe bus will cost around 6-700 bucks for the whole journey.
Shared taxis charge double the amount.. Booked cabs will charge much more |

My son went to Leh to work with my husband in his shop. My husband arranged it with a driver he knows really well. I believe the usual rate this summer for tourists was something like rs. 1500 but I'm not sure about that.
