First, you need to register for the Yatra. Contact the Bangalore branch of Jammu and Kashmir Bank Limited for details of the registration procedure.
Dates: The Yatra starts from 18 June, 2008 and ends on August 16, 2008 ( Raksha Bandhan / Purnima ).
Travel: Train - Take a regular train, such as the Bangalore Rajdhani to Delhi and the Jammu Rajdhani to Jammu.
Share Taxis go from Jammu to Pahalgam or Baltal, the two base camps for the Yatra.
Food: Community kitchens are set up at all the stops along the Yatra route.
Air: Helicopter sorties are organized by Deccan Aviation. See their website.
Safety: No issue. This Yatra route is the most secure terrain in the entire country, during that two month period.
The Trek: Pahalgam to Chandanwari, 16 km is easy.
The next 36 km of the traditional route is more arduous. You also cross a glacier along the way, along with some 500000 pilgrims!
Alternatively there is the shorter route from Baltal. Stop at the grassy, classy meadows of Sonamarg on the way.
Hiring a Pony for around Rs 2650, or even a 'palki' for Rs 10,000 is an option.

Updates: Stay tuned with developments on the Yatra and the situation in Kashmir at this local newspaper website:

For some more information, Amitava343 had this to say about it in another thread.

He also has posted some pictures in his photo gallery, starting on this page and continued onto the next couple of pages.

Unless you are actually going to Amarnath, it would be best to avoid going to Pahalgam during your holiday in Kashmir. Sonamarg will also be crowded with pilgrims proceeding to Amarnath from the Baltal route.
