Hello,
I have been invited to a dear friend's wedding in early July. I hope that someone could advise me on what to wear and how many outfits I should bring? And hopefully, a few ideas as to great gifts. Am I asking for too much? I am going with my best friend and his family from New Delhi to Jaipur. Best friend is an amazing person, but he is a bit of a last-minute kind of guy and I want to make sure that I have time to make the best decisions (especially because I do not want to look like a fish out of water). Because we are flying in from NYC and going straight to Jaipur, I'll have minimal time to go shopping/have anything tailored. So my questions for you are: 1.) What should I wear and how many outfits should I purchase for the wedding festivities. 2.) Can anyone suggest great companies where I can order online and ship to U.S.? 3). Any ideas on fashion magazines or websites that can shed light on latest summer fashions -- just incase I need to shop here in NYC so that I'll have some idea what I am looking for? Thank you so much for any suggestions you can provide. I am so excited!!! This will be my first trip to India and going for a friend's wedding is such a treat. Thank you again. Denean |

I checked your profile and found you were female so -if you have a day or two before the wedding actually starts I would get somebody from your friend's family or group of friends to help you to buy a classy salwar kameez - in fact buy several because I think there will be quite a few functions over a series of days to go to. Jaipur has some very modern styles, you could wear them to dinner parties back in your own home town and stun friends! Get a mix of lightweight cotton ones with great embroidery, 'jewellery' designs and wear them while you are there. They range from very inexpensive to over the top for heavily embroidered, bejewelled creations. I am sure there will be someone to meet and greet you when you arrive so ask them - Indians are very, very hospitable and will enjoy helping you. Also they willl really appreciate the fact that you have gone to this trouble to wear one of their 'traditional' styles of dress. Salwar kameez is much easier to wear than a sari, cool and comfortable. Basically a short dress with splits up the side over loose, baggy at the top tapering to the ankle trousers.

Hehe, sorry, I know my name is unique - and does not indicate gender. I am a woman in her mid-twenties - so I am looking for something that is charming and age appropriate. I figured it would be apparent by the over-obsessing on what to wear. Bad assumption. Clearly.
I did see a few postings regarding dress for wedding, but I was unsure if the postings varied from region to region. Thank you for looking into this! Denean |

Aishah, you are the best!!! I was just worried about asking my friend's family to take me shopping since they haven't seen him for six months and we will only be there for two weeks. I wanted to make sure that he had time to spend with everyone before we headed down to Jaipur.
But thank you, thank you, thank you for your thoughtful advice. One quick follow-up question, what's a great gift for the to-be-married couple? Denean |

Generally people give money and/or something for the house - maybe a brand new American note of dollars up to you (no need to be over the top!) and some nice house item from where you live would go down very well. I remember from where I used to live and had an American friend she rated some glass stuff by a famous company - vases, bowls etc.--as well prized. Something like that would be good - I think the company was Stuben? but not sure!

Just a quick reply - I forgot to tell you about a great place for buying modern versions of salwar kameez or kurta/pants outfits called Anokhi. It is on Tilak Marg near the Secretariat, and it also has a great cafe. The prices are a little dearer but the quality of the cottons etc. is superb. Check this out as well! And enjoy yourself and have a lovely time at the wedding!

Hi denean,
Usually in Indian wedding, we Indian girls either prefer to wear beautiful lengha Chunri or Saree.... wondering y not salwar kameez... as we daily wears it... If its Rajasthani marriage then the wedding function will start three days before marriage & will continue till 2 days after marriage, so try to plan your program accordingly... In lehga Chunri, u can try bandhage Lenhga. Its look awesome. And rest of the days go for salwar kameez. Regarding the gift, go for some meenakari gift items but i.e. very common in Jaipur... what else... let me think & will soon reply.

If you have time to shop in Jaipur, go to the Ganpati Plaza and check out Ranas, the best Ghaghra/Cholis in town.

Most popular wedding gift in India is an envelope of cash or a check, and not a round number (unlucky).

A lengha or gaghra is a long skirt much decorated and beaded - really beautiful but can be expensive. On top you wear a matching decorated blouse. You won't be out of place in either outfit - kurta/ pants or skirt/blouse - for the main event get out all your good jewellery and have a highly decorated outfit and you will look gorgeous! Be guided by the friend who will help you choose your clothes and keep within your budget! Enjoy!

Denean - take a look at a post by Barbara Martyn just on today about 'First trip to India'. She gives a good idea about clothes for a wedding in Jaipur!
