I prefer bus as want to keep my plans a bit flexible. What is your opinion about the Delhi-Jaipur bus service regarding, comfort frequency etc.

Or is it the train a better idea??

Mostly I would be arriving Jaipur late in night. How is the ‘late night tout’ scenario regarding taxi/auto at the bus station/railway station at Jaipur?

How aggressive they are?

Gosh I can't believe I am writing this. and i can't believe it is beach I am replying to
there is a bus service from Bikaner House (Delhi), A/C every hour or so, non-A/C more frequent (at least half an hour)
the travel time is circa 4-5 hrs? there is a rest stop half-way

overall i found this trip very comfortable

oh, yes, touts were pretty agressive, but not physically agressive if you see what i mean
you have to ignore them and not to take the first rickshaw that comes up and not tell the driver where you are going till you moved away from the bus stand and not accept the driver's "friend" in the vehicle

I heard that there are new Volvo buses for extra comfort. But personally, I prefer trains...Im not bus friendly for long distances though took one from Ajmer to Jaipur.

If I may add - I think Jaipur is the most 'hyped' places in Rajasthan. I liked Jaisalmer most and then Jodhpur. Jaipur is like 'must' see on eyerone who is visiting Rajasthan...its so pushy and touristy!
2005: Jodhpur, Pragpur, Garli, Chamba Patan, Kaleshwar Mahadev, Dada Sibba, Pong Lake, Kangra, Dharamsala, McLeod Ganj (Saw HH Dalai Lama preaching!), Kasauli, Kathmandu & Corbett
2004: Kuchesar, Brijghat, Rishikesh, Glasshouse on Ganges, Mukteshwar, Naukuchiatal, Lucknow, Ajmer, Pushkar, Jaipur, Jaisalmer & Jodhpur
2003: Mussoorie, Varanasi, Lucknow & Goa

I think we could have a thread about Jaipur (we have had them about Agra + Pushkar), the first time I went to Jaipur I thought it was overated, the 2nd. time I enjoyed it a lot more.

I would go into detail on a thread discussing Jaipur (won't bother here, as most people looking for info on Jaipur will not check this thread.)

It would be interesting to hear other people's opinion on Jaipur.

Bus

Volvos are very comfortable. 4.5-5 hours Delhi to Jaipur, with one stop at Behror.

Just go to Bikaner House at Pandara Road, New DElhi and head straight for the ticket counters. Ignore any touts who may approach you.

OK Cool Thanks a lot for that some more questions (well many more to follow...)

How far is Bikaner House from Qutab Minar ? how much taxi/auto would cost ? also traveling time in the evening by auto?

Post Hmm auto fare

Qutab Minar to Pandara Road will take about an hour or so by auto. Though I'm not very sure about auto fares, it should be in the range of Rs 80-95, max 100.

Insist on going by the meter, otherwise I think something around Rs 100 or less should be decent enough if you have an arrangement with the auto driver without the meter on.

I do hope you do get some more replies as for the auto fares. I seldom commute by auto so these rates may not be close to the real ones.

Anyway, Good Luck!

Thaks a lot A-P & bora for that

One more question for the Jaipur experts. How many days are 'ideal' to see Jaipur and the 'nearby' places?

guess it depends how much time you have. i probably wouldn't stay longer than 3 days. a day for amber fort, one for city palace and the observatory, and one for shopping/wandering. you could probably squish it down to 2... but i prefer to take my time if possible.

i reckon jaipur is a seriously over hyped tourist trap though. i didn't like it

OK. Thaks for that. What is the 'next best' or 'best' place in rajastan , I'm a bit keen forts, museums etc more than say people watching culture etc (because these sorts of things i'm more used to )

Any ideas are welcome. I've 2-3 days for rajastan, before I'm caught and put back in my cage

Try and go via Neemrana Fort. It is a great hotel 100km west of Delhi. I have just been there two days ago. I was frazzled after travelling down from Shimla. Greta place to relax. Its like the Alhambra in Granada.
