I have not been to that place but what i know is that the food served is pretty good. Never knew the mock village thing. I too would prefer to experience a real village.
How was the food there ? Rose garden should be seen during the rose festival, very very beautiful. Damn i miss those winters in chandigarh

Yeah the food is pretty good, lot's of it, it's probably the best part about it.
I've seen the rose garden in March/April and it looked pretty fabulous then - I miss Chandigarh full stop, the tall swaying eucalyptus trees, wide streets, space, the beautiful homes and their tendered gardens, mmmm.

Just shows how varied everyone's experiences are. We spent a week in Jaiper last Nov. and liked it alot. The rickshaw guys did hang in front of our guest house but were easily discouraged. The only thing I'm sorry about is I didn't know about the lassiwallah and we were in that area many times.
The only actual hassle was a herd of kids that "attacked" me while walking on MI road. I mean, they were quite young and small but there were so many closing in on me I kind of panicked. They were doing that pinching, touching thing. I tried to ignore them, which usually works, but this time didn't. I ran into a shop, which happened to be a gold jewelry store and in order to kill enough time for the scary children's hoard to leave, I was forced to buy something lovely!![]() I guess what I really don't like about Jaipur is how much shopping I was forced to do because they have so much fantastic stuff for sale I guess I'll go back there even though I'll surely be forced to buy more fantastic things! |

most entertaining-
am planning to visit early december, and am so psyched - this whole thread is just the most entertaining read ever! awesome humor - and i know it's probably more amusing to read than to actually experience some of the "hates" but what stories hah!
so back to this choki (flipping) dhani we're going with our parents (so no kids) and i heard it's still worth visiting. is the place full of kids yelling and screaming (which would not be welcome!) and can adults get on these elephants/camels or only kids? we're planning to stay in the "civil lines" part of town -- anything to watch out for? thanks again for the laughs! |

Gee, thanks to everybody's "bad" experiences (including the forced shopping), I'm looking forward to my visit even more now ;-) I'm going in December for the first time (I know, I'm a late bloomer!) and Jaipur is definitely on my list.

jaipur in december!
sounds like at least half a dozen of us here on india mike are going to jaipur in december - eerie - i say we form some sort of a pact and trick those rickshaw-wallahs into some kind of a con (not necessarily involving money but just to give them a taste of their medicine -- say one person everyday takes on a certain area and gives them all sorts of demands to take us all the way to amer fort, and then just when they think they have us good, we back out!!!)
okay - that wasn't exactly brilliant, but i'm sure we could put our devious minds together for a deliciously evil plan boohoohahahaha! ![]() |

That chocki dhani place is sooooo contrived and has incessant demented dinasour(?) noises blaring out to amuse the kids....but YOU may enjoy it! Tell us what you think once you'be been!!

Lol..I actually enjoyed choki dhani..i was there in february, and whilst i would have preferred a REAL visit to a REAL village, choki dhani was fun in the way dubai is 'fun'...tacky,and fabricated, but the thing that impressed me most was the attitude of the rajesthani 'villagers' there..all of them extremly polite, friendly and hospitable and as for the food...they kept a look out and made sure you plate was never ever empty!!!

back from my trip-
didn't have a chance to visit choki dhani since we were so exhausted by the end of the day -- and didn't get too pestered by the cycle rickshaw-wallahs either. what was funny was one of them started this whole conversation with our parents identifying them correctly as south indians and then switching constantly from tamil to malayalam, trying to figure out our cultural identity hah! couple of interesting observations: the guys selling turbans and bangles on the johari bazaar street (near hawa mahal) are really crazy in terms of how they price their merchandise -- we were too tired to bargain hard and found out the next morning that we could have spent half the amount and gotten the same stuff - oh well! and finally there's this awesome stepwell - abhaneri - just two hours off jaipur towards bharatpur -- very much worth a visit. that's my trip report for now on the jaipur segment. had a good time overall - amber fort was the highlight for us and we especially liked a musical performance there in the diwan-i-aam... |

If there is one thing i really hate about jaipur, it's the people. The touts/dishonest shopkeepers are irritating. And me and my friend were harassed by a man on a motorbike. He circled us once and made rude sexual comments. I agree with Barkha. Gross men in Jaipur. Nothing of this sort happened to us in kashmir, punjab, delhi, agra.
Jaipur wasnt that fantastic. Amber fort was interesting though. Be careful when shopping at Pink city area especially at the hawamahal (palace of the winds) area. We got cheated as they charge really high prices. My jaipur guide repeatedly told us - this is a street of cheaters. Last edited by solesouljoy : Jan 1st, 2008 at 22:20. |

though i think in jaipur, the city palace has interesting armoury and gold plated ceilings.. but i guess these is not what i remember about the city.. My impression was streets filled with urine smell and touts that drains and sap your enery.. worst than delhi..
