I have read a little about Jaipur but am not sure if it is worth going the distance considering we are spending 10 days in Nepal and the other 20 in India (I guess from Varanasi across and maybe a little of the north if there was enough time although I doubt it).... What do you all think? THANKS!!

You can take the direct train from Varanasi to Jaipur. Since you are touring in the winter season, the mountains are not the best option, take a car for a one week trip through Rajasthan. A suggested itinerary is
Jaipur - 2 or 3 days
Deogarh - 1 day
Udaipur - 2 days
Jodhpur - 1 day
Train back to Delhi from Jodhpur

This is a popular track, and there are good reasons for it!

Ok. I took courses at the University of Rajasthan in Jaipur for a month 7 years ago. and was there for a couple of days last year.

Really, it is overrated and misrepresented by those photos. I know what you mean though. . the Hawa Mahal (palace of the winds) with those rows of latticework windows can make a great photo. Believe me .... the reality is less stunning
the bottom of it which is never photographed is a bunch of crusty shops, and the upper building itself is barely more than a facade, it is not really a building per se.. as much a 'face' of a building.

There is the observatory.. gets tired quick, that palace in the lake, which i don't think you can actually go to, the Amber palace (which is worth checking out.. but don't take the elephants up... their poor feet get trashed!!) and the Jaipur city 'palace' museum. But many many places in India boast at least as many 'attractions'.

Please note that there are constant semi-advanced scams in the 'downtown' core called the 'pink city'... mostly winding up in the end to dodgy gem dealers and their scamming commision agents. they may even stop you in the road with such questions as.. excuse me, why is there racism? and you feel you have to talk to them to explain the nature of racism... weird. but a common Jaipuri scam

Anyways.. don't get me wrong .. I love Rajasthan. Just can't understand why people think Jaipur is such a "GEM" when other Rajasthani cities which are overlooked are far more fun!

Interesting. What area do you think should be focused on in Rajasthan then? I can imagine totally what you are saying about Jaipur...same sort of thing occurred in Vietnam...

I would definately reccomend Pushkar.. that lovely little town just never loses its charm to me! Also Bhundi is a little visited marvelous city. Jaisalemere, for nice buildings and to get really out in the 'real' desert that you might have in your mind's eye. Bikaner also. If you do go to Udaipur, it is so close to Gujurat so keep in mind there are some very nice places to go in Northern Gujurat too.

What do you mean about Vietnam? gem scams? or was it disapointing? I have always wanted to go there myself. have been only to Lao and Cambodia and quite liked them.

Although India is my true Love!

Vietnam was absolutely fantastic...one of my fave places! But what I meant was like some pictures, it looks completely different in real life... I think the beaches in Nha Trang were a classic example - but still an absolutely magical country!
