How long would it take to drive from Jaipur to Nagaur?

And - other topic - in Jaipur, do you know some specific places for old silver? are there things like silver sugarbowls, teapots, candlesticks in Jaipur? ok if it's dented up a bit.

5 to 6 hours Jaipur to Nagaur via Pushkar

Are you talking about silverware or silver jewelry? Only new silverware available at Arun's Emporium at Government Hostel crossing near Citibank. Plenty of old silver (or made to look like old) jewelry all over town. Chamelwalan Market, Johari Bazaar. Amrapali at Panch Batti is long established experts in this kind of jewelry.

Family travelling to Jaipur

Hi Lily,

We are a family of 4 (children are aged 8 and 10) from Australia looking to spend a month in India and I heard from our phone (Telstra, for all you aussies, would you believe it? haha) connection guy(who's actually from Punjar) that Jaipur is the best place in the whole of India to stay!

Would there be enough for us to do for a whole month? We want to just experience India at our leisure and are not worried about seeing 'everything'. Where else would you recommend we visit? Should we hire a driver for the month? Any ideas for our family? Kindest regards, Tania

India is too vast and varied for any place here to be called 'the best'. A place can be best for someone but not everyone..

If you can tell us when do you plan to visit, then other members might tell you exactly to head, depending on the season, weather and other conditions.

Ok, well we want to stay in Jaipur - I mainly wanted to know if this was a good place to base ourselves for the month. Then I was specifically referring to Rajasthan for other places to visit. Any info or ideas would be great! I'm not sure about the time of year - maybe around Dec/Jan? But honestly, could be anytime as my husband flies through Mumbai once a month.

Where are you Lily? Upset with Indiamike? Hope youll be back here soon!! To anwer your Q, Tania, theres plenty to do in Rajasthan for a month. Have a look at www.indianheritagehotels.com, www.hrhhotels.com, www.welcomheritagehotels.com which list most Rajasthan Heritage hotels. Of course there sites dont cover great guest houses all over the state which are not heritage hotels. Hiring a car and driver for a month will be very expensive. Use trains also and hire local taxies where required through hotels you plan to stay in.

If I wanted to hang out somewhere in Rajsathan, out of the places we went to I'd choose Udaipur, Bundi and maybe a flight to Jaisalmer and back - Udaipur in particular is a real 'hanging out' kind of place that really rewards getting to know it. I'd take up residency with Carol and Babu at Haveli on the Lake quite happily! Our 13 year old happily ran around on his own to sitar lessons and so on... its very safe and friendly - especially on the 'other side' to all the tourists.

I certainly wouldn't want to spend long in Jaipur - just too hectic and touristy.

Teej (the Swing Festival as you call it) in Jaipur is mainly about the procession that starts at Tripolia Gate and goes to Chaugan. Very rare to see swings now but they do put up a swing inside the Tripolia gate in the chowk

Now I understand - I thought it was a music festival... swing music. That would be cool!

Hotel in Jaipur - End of April

Hi everyone, I am totally unaware about India and its my first time in India.
I and my girlfriend plan to be in Jaipur on 25-26 April, spending one-two nights in Jaipur. We need a hotel to stay 1 or 2 nights, so that it would be close to major sightseeing places. What hotel would you suggest, which would be in range of 20-50 USD (which would probably be 1000-2500 Rs.)? So that it would be clean, nice and not far from sightseeing and shopping places.
Thanks in advance!

For its excellent location, you could take the LMB Hotel on Johari Bazar. There you get an AC room in your price range, the Hotel has the best vegetarian restaurant in town, the best Sweet store, and is ideally located within the city wall. All the other places in this middle/upper price range are outside the city wall. This is very important since you stay only one or two night(s). You can walk from there or take a 3-wheeler, or hire a car. The important thing is that in the between-times you can take a quick stroll outside and are right away in the old part of town.

The disadvantage is that it is overpriced in regard to the quality of he rooms that it offers. It is famous for its Sweet Store and its restaurant, but not for the hotel-part. I read a dismal review on another forum, but i would still choose this one for the location. I have stayed there several times, because i like that quality of being able to walk around the old city without needing to bother with a taxi. There are lots of touts in Jaipur, which, by the way can be interesting if you are interested in gems, because these people take you into back-alleys where you are shown stones and get to see the local way of dealing in gems (just do not buy anything expensive). Even though you do not have much time, or none at all, maybe you want to see at least one such jewel-show. Have fun. And take at least one scoop of Keshari milk-halwa at the LMB sweet store. (keshari=safron). Mmmmh
